Secondary Market Bang for Buck.

In 2020 while certain brands have gone crazy on the secondary/used market(Rolex, Patek, AP) there are certain brands that have become great deals for those who want a great luxury watch at a minimum price.
As the title says, bang for buck.
What brands would qualify as great watches for the price on the used market.
Here are some I think would meet this criteria.

A. Lange & Sohne
Girard Perregaux
IWC
JLC
Panerai

I know I have just scratched the surface and would love to hear what others think.

Lange for sure. Some of the independents are quite reasonable used too.

Do used Langes depreciate rapidly?

Not necessarily. Depends on the model. Like most other brands, most of them depreciate but many of the higher end ones do not.

Moser and non-Overseas Vacheron are amazing pre-owned deals.

I don't mean to contradict, Sinanamus, but Lange drops like a rock in a bucket of water. Even if you get it at a reasonable discount from an AD.

And I am a HUGE Lange fan, and often take the hits by buying these because I love them and want to support.

But ouch. It hurts a lot more than it should.

Unless you got lucky with a Lumen or with an SS Odysseus, of course.

Girard Perregaux and Glasshutte Original give the most bang for buck pre-owned.

Like many brands Lange has good and bad models for depreciation, plenty of Patek's drop similar amounts to Lange while certain Lange's hold value like the best Patek's. The Lange AD discounts available on new pieces have hit the brand hard on the secondary market in the past but there is now a move to the Boutique sales model and no discounts so we will see.

I would actually look at some Patek's on the secondary, some offer great bang for the buck - 5110 worldtimers are great pieces and great value compared to the current 5230's. Lots of Calatrava's of yesteryear are also stunners.

Yeah GO is a great alternative to Lange if you like the Lange aesthetic. I had a Lange 1 and a Panomatic Lunar at the same time for a while. If I had to pick one it would be the pano. More watch for the money and no overlaying discs for the date.

Totally biased opinion. I think Lange is about to enter a bull market. I have never seen so much buzz about it historically.

I agree. ALS went from a secondary market underperformer (some models not included obviously) for years to a pretty hyped watch currently. I am not a fan of the Odysseus personally, but I think it had it's intended effect.

I dont even want to say the price out loud but I bought a new Limited edition 69 made Platinum Zenith el Primero Striking 10th for an un belevablygood deal. I also bought one of the most hated watches in the game a new Girard Perregaux Laureato Chronograph for 4 figures.

I definitely want to pick up the pervious edition Vacheron Constantin Overseas chronograph with date at 12.

Breguet and Blancpain are great values on the secondary market - in house movements with excellent finishing.

I have made a few purchases recently. In general, anything that is not mainstream and hyped is good. GO, GP, JLC offer phenomenal pre-owned value, especially in precious metals. Omega 18K models are dramatically underpriced if you have the means and fancy gold--you can get a Tresor for less than 8K USD. Pre-owned Seikos are a blast too.

In other words, if you're not into Rolex, Patek, AP, you're in a great watch buying market.

Lange is getting expensive. The truth is that Lange beats Patek, but most people did not realize that until now.

Breguet for sure, can get a very complicated timepiece with excellent finishing for a relatively low price. I bought a marine for nearly half off retail on the secondary market which is less than a Submariner and the Breguet blows the Sub away.

Also think some APs are amazing value preowned in particular the Millenary and Jules Audemars models and yes I own both

Yeah, very understated brand and an exceptional finish (on the LUC models).

I am on the hunt for a VC 47192. Its price compared to the 5070 may be the biggest bargain in all of watchland.

Lange stopped giving good discounts 3/4 years ago, I remember they only offered 10K off a 90K Zeitwerk and I thought then they were trying the no discount Rolex model, and looks like it might be paying off now, they are at least a cut above the others outside the usual top 3.

As the owner of a dot-dial Panerai 233, I can confirm it’s a bargain.
