Lange vs. Two Independents

Hey all,

I could use some feedback.

A few weeks ago I posted about a potential Grand Lange 1 moon phase purchase. I was debating between the JLC Ultra thin Perpetual and the 5396. I ended up passing on the JLC and found the 5396 too similar to my 5726. So the Lange was the one for the picking. But there are two other watches from independents that I also like and all three are in the same price bracket.

The FP Journe Chronometre Souverain 40mm in RG with the new gold dial. And the Laurent Ferrier Galet Micro-Rotor with Breuget Numerals (also 40mm).

So we've got the Lange in RG vs. the FPJ in RG vs. the LF in WG.
(Disclaimer: I own a FPJ CB so perhaps the dial layout of the Journe is too similar. And whiles I really love the workmanship and design of the Ferrier I am a little weary of spending this amount on a new brand with an unknown future. I also haven't seen a LF owner not here forums yet).

Thanks in advance... (some pics are from the internet).

It's hard for me to say "no" to a FPJ but you already have one, so my vote goes to ALS. LF it's just too classic for my personal taste.

Why not a cheap Patek?

Yes, was on my mind too. I was looking for a classy 3 hander but one with a little flair. That Calatrava is a beauty, but at that price I'd be sorely tempted to go for an AC.
Am I crazy for desiring an independent like Journe or Ferrier? The smart money says stick with Patek or Lange but Journe's designs are enchanting and the Ferrier movement and dial is plain gorgeous.

Some more pics of the LF. Classic yes, but not heavy or too grand.

"Cheap" and "Patek" do not belong in the same sentence!

The ALS gets my vote, I love the unique layout of the moon phase. LF gets my second choice vote. While I think FPJ does fantastic work, and their finishings are superb, I am just not a fan of their designs.

As an owner of the platinum Grand Lange 1 MP I say you will love RG one. Jsut a perfectly balanced and beautiful watch! The LF is a stunner to but clearly a totally different look.

You've got to give the independents a chance, and as you already have an FPJ, then the LF it is.
However, just to throw a bit of a spanner in the works, what about an H Moser & Cie?
As much as PP is rightly revered, they're not the only ones sitting at the top of the tree – ALS, GO, and Moser are all up there too.

Funny you should mention the Moser. I enquired about the black titanium perpetual and quite liked it. But I'm not sure I wouldn't get bored of the all black look quickly. The movement didn't seem as well finished as the LF or Journe. Here is a pic:

I saw your MP in the Lange thread and it is indeed beautiful. I think the RG has a slightly different feel - a bit more charming and sparkly but perhaps not quite as potent. Both looked excellent to me and the finish of the dial was really something special. I guess it just comes down to the asymmetry and whether the novelty and uniqueness of it (for me) would continue to capture my imagination. Asymmetry is a funny thing - it can draw you in and yet repel you at the same time...

I voted ALS but it sounds like you want the LF. Go for it. It's very beautful

The LF that I like with the breuget numerals and opaline dial only comes in white gold. The price is also considerably higher than the Journe (they left that part out!).

I voted Laurent Ferrier but would opt for the RG with the chocolate dial. Just absolutely drop dead stunning.

That is stunning. But it's difficult to get now and also even more expensive than the numerals version. LF prices are through the roof now.

I'm a bit surprised the LF received more votes than the Lange 1. 7-3.

Lange vs. Two Independents

In platinum I'd take the G Lange MP, but in RG I'd have the LF. Chocolate dial please.

This may be an inappropriate question, but while I respect the Journe pieces and love the LF's, are these not entities run by a single heartbeat?

What happens to value if production ceases, and where does one go for service?

That said, funds permitting, would I love to own the rg Ferrier imaged above?

Absolutely.

Lange. Why not a datograph, time zone or even 1815 up down? Just asking as those would be my pics.good luck.

I wouldn't be worried about this eventuality. When the time comes, I'm sure one of the big groups will take over and carry on.

Just to further compound your indecision, another option I'd forgotten about - Parmigiani Fleurier.
You can have a plain 3-hander or multiple complications like retrograde date, hemispheres moonphase, etc.
Very interesting case/lug design too, so a bit novel and different from the typical status quo.
