Thoughts on the Gevril Tribeca. Rolex homage or ripoff?

Hey Guys—

Lot of hype on the Gevril Tribeca particularly since Wei Koh said he was a fan. Anybody own one? Is this a cool piece or are we thinking this is a cheesy ripoff. It’s currently trending around 5-6k btw!

Always enjoy the responses!

In before the transfer to the appropriate subforum.

Incidentally.......blatant rip-off. But who cares?? Would you honestly wear it? I sure wouldn’t.

I really love Rolex. We all are smart enough to recognize a copy.
I prefer real Rolex for the Rolex look, everything else is bordering on being a fake to me, I don't care what a Youtuber says or is paid to say or sounds cool to say.

$5k for a fake Rolex?!

Isn't the whole point of "homages" that they share the look but are affordable?

Wouldn't this be like paying full-price for a Bentley which has been rebranded as a Hyundai and had its engine removed and replaced by one from a lawnmower?

I'll split the difference and charitably call it a branded fake.

the money people pay for these is totally asinine. you are buying a 'knock off,' pure and simple. if you want to buy a fake PN, $5-6k gets you a Valjoux 72 with a high quality Vietnam case and dial.

It's a copy for sure and overpriced in today's market , but it's still an extremely well built watch. I think it deserves some respect.

I get the whole homage bit and it is a nice looking watch, albeit recreation of a legendary piece.

Not for me, though. No matter who says they are a fan.

All homages are ripoffs, Squale, Steinhart whatever other garbage you can name. The only thing separating them from a fake is the logo. Only real Rolex.

how about when the ripoff is Rolex approved.... tudor sub?

IMO thats kind of worse as its almost a rolex but its not and its cheaper and the brand is dumping on their customers who paid more. Kind of tongue and cheek but you see the point
Old tudors with Rolex cases and model names is another one. I guess you could argue its Toyota and Lexus, but they dont share product names.

I like tudor a lot and i have one.

Take the article with a grain of salt. Wei Koh was doing some close collaborations with Govberg (Watchbox) at the time, youtube videos, etc. so i am not surprised he is cheer leading for the watch.

This was an obvious puff peice, and now the puzzle peices fall into place.

They can't have been popular, or they would have finished their "limited" run. Now they have 67 more to sell and need to create some hype to move them.

The Gevril is a fad watch, a copy, that was brought to popularity by some influential hipster trend setters. They will crash into obscurity.............

If its a logo away from being called a fake, that's too close for comfort

It looks like a very nice copy of a Newman Daytona. Even the $2900 retail is absurd. I can't see many people jumping on this.

Have you ever handled a Steinhart? Rolex wasn't the first to come out with a diver watch.

Blancpain released the Fifty Fathoms in 53, collaborating with French special forces.

Rolex released the Submariner in 54 as an evolution of their Turn-O-Graph.

Not sure what that has to do with Steinhart’s 2001 founding and launch of their rip-off Submariner the “Ocean 1.”

But Rolex wasn't the first to come out with a diver, correct?

Red Herring. Rolex didn’t copy someone else's design and put their name on it. Lots of companies make divers. The reputable ones aren’t counterfeiters.
