I'm a big time SD43 fan, and own one. I've also owned the DSSD (older version). I do take offense the the authors mention that the SD43 is the
"most technologically advanced diving watch Rolex makes".

That distinction does belong to the DSSD......period!

Having said that, I greatly favor my SD43 to any of the DSSD models (new or old), but that's just my preference.

Agree with everything you said, except the last sentence. Had the 43...prefer my DSSD. Sea Dweller = no cyclops

For me, it's all about the proportions. That and the fact that I don't like the Ring Lock System and extra writings on the dial.....which is just too much for me.

I'd also add that while not traditional, the cyclops is a welcome addition for my 51 year old eyes. I have an 8" wrist, and had always wanted a "bigger submariner", so I guess I got my wish. Would never go back now.

To each his own!

Agree with this 100%

DSSD is a very impressive watch, but I have tried one on and the proportions are MUCH better on the SD43. Love the cyclops as well, and my eyes appreciate it

I love my 43 but despise the cyclops! When it gets serviced many years from now, that guy’s coming back without one.

The SD43 is a fantastic watch. I have both the 126660 and 126600. I wear the SD43 more often.

I personally think that if Rolex morphed the Submariner into the same size case as the SD43, albeit a bit thinner, it would be a hit.

Well, unless you source an aftermarket sapphire crystal, it will come back with a "blemish" where the cyclops used to be. Rolex now places anti glare coatings under the cyclops, and when removed, you can see clearly where it was.

FYI.

I suspect when the author states "technologically advanced" he is referring to the movement as his comparison was with the 116660.

However, the 126660 is unquestionably the most technologically advanced dive watch Rolex produces

Good point. It’s a problem that’s a long ways off anyways. But I wouldn’t want that sort of marking visible, that’s for sure.

What I'm not 100% sure of, is where the coating is placed. Is it under the cyclops or on the inside of the crystal itself?? Perhaps someone here knows for sure.

Again, I'm not positive, but perhaps the anti-glare coating can be removed, or polished away.

Good luck to you sir!

The long time search of the perfect wristwatch for me ended with the SD43, my grail, may be a PM watch would be more exclusive in the future but the Single Red SD is my perfect wristwatch. Is the DSSD more advanced? Of course! and I really like the DSSD.

Nice review, thanks.

Absolutely love my 43 and while I'm used to larger watches (AP ROO44 ect), I found the DSSD just awkward on my wrist. The bulky less streamlined nature of it was further amplified quite a bit after acquiring the SD43, so I sold the DSSD to a friend. I did like the gradient blue face but found the watch permanently in the winder after the 43 arrived. It really does feel phenomenal on.

Agree that the SD43 is pretty close to perfect for a big wristed guy. It has made my James Cameron DSSD a safe queen.

93/100, not bad.

To this day, the SD43 remains my favorite diver.

I hope Rolex will release a Bluesy SD43, or even better full yellow gold. That would be an incredible piece.

Got it a little over a week ago and it’s my favorite I think. I love my Deep Sea but the proportions are just perfect. I luckily snagged an MK1, looks like the prices on the secondary market are going up!

Sd43 was a homerun by Rolex in terms of design.

I would not change a thing. It’s perfect.

Sorry but I've to disagree. I think the SD43 is the most technical advanced diver as it has the cyclops.

Rolex mentioned that the cyclops wasn't possible before as it couldn't handle the high water pressure at 4000 feet... and to be honest, that is indeed VERY impressive!

The DSSD is a great watch, please don't get me wrong!

The Sd43 is a beautiful watch, it's a hard-to-get watch from the AD but yet you can get it from TS for a few hundred dollars more than what you would pay for AD + sale tax.

You are right. It seems the slow burners are often the most collectible with Rolex. I remember when I could pick up a Hulk for only $6800.

Rolex nailed it because I think the SD43 is the most popular SD ever. I also think it is causing a bit of spike in both interest and prices on older versions. The SD is in demand. And it should be. Wonderful watch. Glad I got a 2017!

mine, check out the lume. What is MK1, MKII? How do you tell the difference and is one considered more rare than the other?
