OP 39 Overrated?

Is the OP 39 overrated? I know alot of articles are saying that the OP39 is the best value prop in the rolex line up. But everytime this watch is brought up on this forum people say the explorer I is the better option. Is this watch actually overrated?

Let’s just say the Explorer is the better watch, that doesn’t mean the OP 39 is overrated. Both watches are fantastic.

Both offer clean, minimal designs with very different aesthetics. I could easily see both peacefully coexisting in a collection. In particular, I think the OP 39 white dial released last year was a fantastic addition to the catalog.

It’s a very classy looking piece at a great price. What is it really missing that the Explorer has? Easy link? Is that really that important?

I like the Explorer but want a white dial in that form factor with a time only comp. The OP 39 does that.

I much prefer the white dial OP to the Explorer. But that’s just a personal preference issue.

I would say it is under rated.

It depends what you are looking for. From my short stint with an OP39 (about 8 months) I absolutely fell in love with it. I do not need a date window, and the size of the watch is just perfect. I am also not a fan of black dials, so the rhodium dial with light blue highlights really hit the spot. It is not a super dressy watch, but works with any outfit.

I feel the OP39 should get some more praise for what it is.

The new white OP is a new classic, definitely not overrated.

I went to an AD to pick up an Exp, left with the OP, and have no regrets.

Also, doesn’t the explorer exist to celebrate the OP?

Because of the Everest climb?

I prefer the OP. The explorer only “wins” because of pedigree and it’s technically a professional model. They should just put an easy link on the OP bracelet though.

I think it's underrated actually - the only functionality it loses out to the Explorer on is Easylink, which for many people isn't worth the price difference. Personally, I prefer the style of the OP and would still have chosen it even if the Explorer had been available for less!

I was looking for a watch as a birthday gift for our son. The ones I looked at were Omega Aqua Terra, Tudor Heritage Chrono, Rolex Explorer I and the white and black dial OP39. In the end I picked the white dial OP39. The Omega is a great watch but they are priced at almost the same as the OP. Nothing wrong with the Omega some may even argue is a more technologically advanced movement. But let’s face it a Rolex is a Rolex and it just feels more significant for a first nice watch for a young guy. As for the explorer I it uses the same 3132 movement inside the only real difference is the dial and the easy link and about $1,000 more. I prefer the dial on the OP it just seems more classical and can be a real nice looking dress watch when one wants to dress up or can dress down in more casual settings it just seems more versatile to me. The Explorer I looks more casual. The easy link is nice but it’s not worth the price difference to me.
With all the crazy price increases with all the Swiss brands in the last several years the OP 39 seems to be a pretty good deal within that price range.

Personally I think it is overrated. The comparison people are making is the explorer which is valid but what I was struck by trying it on is the white dial OP is similar to the white dial Datejust with applied white indices. The datejust is so much more interesting in my opinion. The OP is too sterile for my taste.

I haven’t seen anyone hating on either one, although this is a friendly environment. Both are quite different so probably not a fair comparison.

I don’t understand how anything that’s a matter of personal taste can be overrated.
