Seiko Mods

I recently came across a FB page about modifying Seiko watches. Some of the bezels looked very close to Rolex bezels. What’s the forum opinion on this ?

I am a huge Seiko fan and while I do not like modifications for more expensive watches, Rolex/PP/VC, I think it really works well on some of the Seiko's. Have some fun with it.

I love tinkering, and this looks like fun for sure

The sincerest form of flattery

Seriously though, I had no idea of the amount of Seiko mods available. Some of them look absolutely amazing. I particularly like lots of the dial treatments.

I’m not a fan of the ceramic inserts ... for some reason I just like the aluminum bezels best on my Seiko

Yes, there are bezels that are clearly modeled after Rolex bezels. In fact, some model #s even end in the suffix “RX,” coincidentally.

Then you've found nirvana. Having done more than a dozen Seiko mods, I can confirm it's a blast, and only limited by your imagination.

I'll play. I always keep a Seiko diver in the watch box. This dial is the Lucius Atelier Great Wave dial. The rest is sourced from various sources and assembled by Nixon Tse / NXNMODS on IG. Just a fun watch I wanted made for Summer. I'm a sucker for full lume.

Lots of wonderful work Dan! Very creative. I'm not a fan of making Seikos look like Rolex that seems in vogue now. You have chosen some real nice unique tasteful looks that will remain timeless and not represent a particular time that will soon jump the shark.

Thanks for the kind words!

Yeah, I'm not big on modding to create a homage. I love combining different components to see the end result. Sometimes they work well together, sometimes they don't. But that's half the fun.

With the stealth dial examples, I literally just sanded down the dials and used paint I found in the garage to see what it would look like. The black textured dial looks like wet asphalt at certain angles.

It's a lot of fun and can also be addicting.

Paint in the garage!

This is my fave. Can you tell me about it? Reference, parts, etc...

I was in Milan in 2014 [has nothing to do with the story, just name dropping, I guess] and was thinking what would make the ultimate pilot/ diver watch mod. This is a standard issue SKX007. I had the case sent to England for a TST conversion. John @ TST mills the case to accept his custom Tuna type shrouds. John also drills the lug holes. The coin edge no ratchet bezel is from Murphy in NY. The dome sapphire crystal and sloped 12 hour bezel insert are from Dagaz. The floating pilot handset is from One Second closer, the dial is from Yobokies.

Probably spent way too much but I love the uniqueness and happy with the results.

That looks like a lot of fun. Is that Hammerite paint on the first one?
Kewl...as they say in some quarters.

This video is what got me started - don't remember how i stumbled on it, but it sure lured me into the seiko rabbit hole.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UEjFZutgU8

The "kid" in the youtube video definitely has some talent, but watching him assemble a watch gives you a good idea of what's involved.

A decent set of tools needs (crystal press), hand removal & installation tools, movement holder etc can be had under $150 - and even under a hundred if you decide to go with the "el cheapo" crystal press

and there are literally hundreds of "how to" videos on youtube on this very subject

Thanks, mate!

Yep, had a can of Hammerite and though it could make an interesting dial. That watch is a perfect example of having parts laying around and deciding to see what I could come up with that day.

I'm much more Macgyver, than watchmaker. I use some specified watchmaker tools as well as tools I received from my dad after his retirement [nothing to do w/ watches]. I just dig in and see what happens.

Buy some standard tool sets that include hand setters, movement holder, tweezers, loupe, crystal/ bezel press [don't skimp on this], and handset puller, etc.

Once you learn how to remove a stem and then the movement, you'll be hooked. You might find installing the hour hand easy, the minute hand is slightly more difficult, and the second hand is a real challenge. Especially after a couple cups of coffee. It will take a few attempts but worth the effort. Best advice is to work on a broken watch to see what it takes to remove hands etc. That way you have at least a little experience when working on a working model.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you for all that info', Dan.
Must admit it sounds intriguing.
I'm now looking for a broken watch to play with.....
I'll let you know how I get on, and, if/when I get 'stuck'!!
😷

Ps. I'm not intending on doing anything other than cleaning the solid silver case, but.
I have a beautiful rectangular Roy King that needs polishing. Would you (or anyone here ) know how to get into it? There is no removable 'back'.
