Should I Consolidate / Trade Up Watches?

My watch collecting journey started in earnest in 2014 and over the last ~10 years I've accumulated a collection of watches that I am proud of with pretty much every "goal" watch I've wanted up to this point residing in my safe.

Over the last few months however I've looked at my collection of 10 watches and realized a few things:

- I don't cycle through these 10 watches and really only wear 3-4
- Unless I'm wearing a suit (rarely) I prefer wearing watches on bracelets
- Full yellow gold may be too loud for me (wife says so)
- I do love a Daytona
- Wife won't let me sell the 40th anniversary rose gold day date (wedding watch)
- I really want a Patek Nautilus
- I'm tired of having a lot of "stuff" just sitting around
- I may be a hoarder

With that in mind I'm considering a few alternatives to change up the collection and curious of your thoughts. The watches I'm considering parting with in the scenarios are a YG Daytona "Newman" Dial (116528), YG Oysterflex Daytona (116518ln), AP RO Silver Dial 37mm (15450), Vacheron FiftySix (Vacheron) and Rose Gold Cartier Santos de Cartier (Cartier)

Scenario 1:
Trade: 116528, 15450, and Vacheron (+cash) toward a Patek 5712
Keep: PP 5712, 116518ln, DD 228235, AP Rose Gold 38mm Chrono, Cartier, + Panerai and IWC that have no trade in value

Scenario 2:
Trade: 116528, 116518, 15450, Vacheron, Cartier (+lots of cash) toward a Patek 5712 AND Platinum Daytona 116506 Diamond Dial
Keep: PP 5712, Platinum Daytona, DD 228235, AP Rose Gold 38mm Chrono

Scenario 3:
Trade: 116528, 116518, 15450, Vacheron, Cartier (+lots of cash) toward a Patek 5740G
Keep: PP 5740G, DD 228235, AP Rose Gold 38mm Chrono

I know this is a lot of text but I've never really sold anything from the collection and value everyone's opinions here.

Couldn’t give Nautilus away not long ago. 2014 could have bought a 5712 under retail but you didn’t. Ask yourself why?

To be fair in 2014 I was buying Panerai’s and IWC. The heavier pieces were added in 2018/2019 when Patek’s were already fairly pricey. Also I was hooked on gold at that point and saw the value in PM Rolex…

Ashame to let any of your current pieces go except maybe the VC.
Great lineup that you'll likely regret letting go of later on.

Scenario 2 probably for me but I really like that Santos. I'd give up the IWC and Panerai over the Santos

2 - PP 5712, Platinum Daytona, DD 228235, AP Rose Gold 38mm Chrono is a really nice place to be in, lots covered.

A slight variation, but how about:

End up with the 5712/1a, 116506 baguette dial, the RG DD40, and the 116518ln.

Punt the rest.

I would do 2 in your shoes. Actually option right above is even better.

It'd be option 2 for me, if I were u. Also I'd get rid of the iwc, go and panerai too.

Agreed. You already have a Genta Integrated bracelet watch. What are the reasons you don’t wear the Royal Oak? Would said reasons apply to a Nautilus after 6 months?

Scenario 2

... However, would probably stay put and track the development in watch prices. Dont see that 5712 premium being sustainable, and platinum Daytona is also dropping. You have a fantastic collection already.

I'd keep the YG Daytona. Sick piece. Get rid of anything else you don't wear to get something you will wear.

I would go with option 2...sounds like the PM are covered with them and you still have the IWC and Panerai as your beater watches.

⬆️⬆️⬆️ agreed.
Everything would be covered even if you wear a suit. Nice variety of brands, beautiful PM and SS pieces.

That YG oysterflex is stunning. Keep it, for sure!!

Personally I don't like that cartier or the VC56. Easy pass on those. Same with IWC, panerai...

Great collection, with the collection that you have, money should not be the object, so keep them all and add whatever you want.

By the way, in your signature: AP ROC 38mm should it be 26315OR instead of 25315OR?

If I’m spending your money….

I’d go:
5740g (tried one on in December… it’s untouchable. If I had the money, that’s what I’d get. End game watch.
DD
Platinum or steel Daytona…

I know you had the AP in that spot, but for me the case of the AP and sundials would never get picked over the 5740… a steel Daytona would fit better in my mind on that spot.

i dont get the swapping the RO for the 5712. Not that the nautilus isn't a bit nicer, it is (IMO), but you already have one of the integrated bracelet royalty. Unless you dont like the sliver/white face RO.

But having said all that - Scenario 2

It's not necessarily about the money, its just that I feel its a waste having a bunch of watches I am not wearing and maybe I should experience something else.

Good catch! Yup 26315

I will still have a rose gold royal oak though. The steel AP I have is nice but dial is a bit boring for me and if I had a steel Patek I doubt I'd wear the royal oak.

I’d keep all those pieces. When you can’t stand it later down the road like retirement where you don’t want to spend time and money servicing all those, then consolidate.

Ended up selling both Daytonas and the 37mm Royal oak and picking up this 5740. I will get another Daytona some day, likely a white gold, but this should keep me occupied for a bit.
