Who gives better resale offers??

Would an authorized dealer or a trusted seller give more value in a watch? What's the general consensus?

Without a doubt, a trusted seller will offer you more.

Agree with above.
Had good experiences trading with trusted sellers here. Fair value and easy to deal with.

Depends on the deal. My AD offered more than a well respected trusted seller here for a trade up. YMMV.

How does one go about offering a trade? Probably a silly question but I have to learn some how!

Just contact them. Usually I am looking to buy another watch and trade one I have. I just email or text them depending on who it is.

Just call or email and tell them what you have and what you want to trade for.
I have never done a trade, but I have entertained the idea and still am not ruling it out. In my case, DavidSW offered me more than my AD, without even seeing my watch! He was very fair, but keep in mind that they are in the business of making money.

I have had mixed experiences with the trusted sellers. Best AD buyer I have seen is Govberg.

Govberg only offered me $6000 on my 4 month old Datejust II Dark Rhodium with diamond dial that retails for $11050.00. Bob's Watches the same. You would think it would be worth at least $9k...

If the AD doesn't deal in used watches (many do not) then don't expect much because they will likely wholesale it out themselves, and they want to make a buck on it along the way.

This too. Mine doesn't deal much in used watches.

depends on the deal structure.

(an outright sale (just buy my watch) to a buyer is NOT a trade-in.)

Trading in a watch is giving away money. Sell it yourself here and pocket the extra dollars.

Trusted seller. AD will stick you on some crazy margin. You probably already get that hint though from the above contributed posts. :)

Retail $9K, maybe (seems high to me). It's a used watch and you will get used-wholesale pricing from a reseller.

Check the For Sale forum to see what your watch is retailing for, then adjust downward for the reseller's margin. Expect to lose money on the deal. Flipping is almost always at your loss.

You're dreaming if you think you'd get $9k. $6k is a bit low but about what I'd expect for a cash offer from someone with a brick and mortar presence. Ask davidsw for a quote. They're selling on here in the $7k range.

I've dealt with DavidSW in trades and the offers are fair, others around or a bit below in my experience.

But as someone mentioned, flipping in most cases results in a loss, some people are fine with that, others not so much.

Unfortunately you almost always take a loss on new products. No different than a car or other good. Usually worse with luxury items.
Part of putting a deal together is to be realistic going in and know the resale market so you go in with knowledge of what is "fair". Generally the only watches I don't lose some $ on are vintage.
I have had plenty of insulting offers over the years but for the most part only deal with a couple of guys these days. One vintage and one modern.
As members say about AD's, establishing a relationship with trusted sellers is similar IMHO.
I don't have access to a good AD in my region so rely on the sellers here to have a relationship with.

Just curious. How is that possible when you are new and have no references, etc?
I've considered it and I know I am honest, but how would I expect someone else to know/trust that?

I agree. I would go to a trusted seller rather than sell myself on the Forum. I do not know how to do that.

Retail on this watch is exactly $11050.00. I see however that the fair market value is hovering around $7k for used on this particular model.

I hate to say it, but if your not a trusted seller it's hard to sell on here at a decent price. They say you can hardly lose money on a Rolex, but trust me you do lose unless you bought pre owned at a great price.

Is Bob's Watches legit?

I am thinking of calling them soon and seeing if they will let my AD verify the purchase that I make.

Not in my experience.

It's all about the qualifications/feedback you can bring from other selling sites and how well you communicate with your prospective buyer.

If you don't have any selling feedback from any other sites, then it will be more difficult to sell here, but considering the amount of money that will be left on the table in a trade, isn't it worth the effort to try and sell it yourself first?
