1986 Datejust TT - does the extended model number on papers indicate the dial type?

I have a 1986 18K/SS Datejust with papers and all the accessories, it’s not perfect but it means a lot to me.

The original dial and datewheel isn’t with the watch anymore. I need to service it and I would like to either:

A. Possibly put the original champagne dial back on it, with correct datewheel. I really am not a fan of that style dial.
B. Put a correct 1986 style original white stick dial in it with correct datewheel

Parts I will need to give to the watch maker are:
- New Rolex plexi crystal
- Rolex date wheel
- Rolex dial

I’m open to opinions, reasoning one way or the other. This watch will never be sold, I would enjoy a white dial more. I saw a really nice original example with the small Roman outer track/stick markers. I have a feeling this is possibly a later dial offered?

10-4

Bezel, dial, crystal and datewheel were swapped for non original pieces. I think the dial was a refurbed original dial but it’s not original to the watch and it’s not original Rolex painted, so it’s fake basically.

•After market sapphire conversion crystal
•Refurb diamond applied dial
•Non original diamond bezel
•After market white date wheel

I still have the original bezel and I hope to god the watch maker put original hands back on it. Yes I know I ruined the watch, no need to remind me. I feel really bad about it.

It was 13 years ago, I have been meaning to do this for awhile. Since it needs a service I figured now would be the ideal time. I will snap pics shortly.

There is a link above to the watch. Apparently my pictures are too large for the forum. I can upload them to a hosting site later today if needed.

Thank you,
Chris

I appreciate it. I’m hoping to approximate what style white dials are correct for my watch year and find one.

I can find a crystal and date wheel.

I have a feeling a loose, nice white stick dial may be hard to find.

Ruined what? It's a datejust and people customize all day long to their liking... Just keep the original parts and that's it... I'm about to put the same dial as you but in black and it cost only $40 to install and takes 5 minutes to revert it back if I need to sell to a purist...

My taste has just changed. I wish I wouldn’t have messed with it.

I don’t have he original dial so I will just go with something a bit different but factory. That’s my real regret.

Ok, here is the dial I bought and the before shot. I have a correct date wheel on the way, the watchmaker has the crystal. I’ll post some pics after I get it back from LAWW.

Nice. Please forget all that originality nazi stuff. If it were a million dollar Daytona that's one thing but it is a DateJust. DJs are fun to own exactly because you can do anything you want. Never, ever worry about what some faceless guy on the internet says...unless he pays for your watch. Relax and enjoy it!

I’m not a big fan of the Datejust now days, it was my dads watch. He bought it new in 86ish so I was 3 years old. He wore it daily for the 12 years he owned it until he passed.

We stuck it in the box, in a closet, and I forgot about it for years. When I was 21 or so I started wearing it, and around that time I ended up doing some things to it. I really just wanted the sapphire conversion crystal on it, but I ended up doing a bit more. By the time I was in my mid/late 20’s I got tired of the flashy diamonds,

It’s a full set, box/papers/hangtag/etc. I just want to bring it back to it’s original look, how he enjoyed it.
