I'm not suggesting that the OP, or others, necessarily have dealers do a personal search. I'm just saying it's better to network and try to get an early heads-up if a watch you're looking for comes along. Top examples, for the most part, often don't get "listed" nowadays in the traditional way.

And yes, you'll pay a premium for top examples from the best dealers, but I'll gladly pay (within reason). It's always, always better to overpay for an excellent example, than get a good deal on a mediocre/poor example. Within a year or two, you'll realize you actually didn't overpay.

Everyone tells you that Japan is a safe place to buy watches

But they have crooks in Japan too ( i have been going to Japan at least on a year since 2007)

Why not Buy in the USA and go inspect the watch first hand?

Great red subs aren’t unicorns. They pass by every now and then here, on ig, at dealers etc. The main issue here seem to be that the poster can’t recognise a great specimen. With some more experience and knowledge it will just take some patience to find a good one. Once a good one comes along there wont be time to create a thread and wait for replies. Have money ready and either study up or get to know someone that already can identify a nice watch. Then it will be fairly easy to find a red sub in top condition.

Keep looking! You'll find the right one at the right price. I bought this one for less than $20k from a private party.

Thank you may friend, I just had to play the waiting game, which can be really difficult! Worth it in the end.

This watch has issues. Dial, case, insert. In that order.

Anyone telling you that the insert is period correct is either disingenuous or lacking knowledge. Neither is good for a watch dealer.

Cheers.

$1500 for a Mk 3 bezel insert isn’t realistic in my recent experience. I’ve been hunting for some time for a decent example at a reasonable price.

i'm inclined to think the hands have been re-lumed on the piece the OP pictured above as well as the other various issues noted above.
