How about “Retro”?

Hey guys!

Been seeing numerous threads about what vintage really is...some say 4-digit, some say “at least 25 years old”...time is ticking though and 25 years back is now 1993 ...

Would it be totally outrageous to just call the 5-digit Rolexes “Retro”? We then have “modern”, “retro” and “vintage”...fair enough? Of course some 5-digit bastards might still have rehaut engravings and be very modern...some might still be in production (16623?) but anyway : )

Can we just agree on celebrating this “baptism” of the “Retro”category with pics of some retro love? Let me share some scans of my first Rolex, bought new in 2000

"Retro" can't really apply to the age of something, like a watch, a car, a bottle of wine. Rather, retro is a self-conscious style, one that recycles the past in its very design. That which is retro is inherently backward thinking and contemptuous of the present or future. Since we're here in a watch forum, think of the timepieces that are currently being made with dials painted to look like they have an aged patina. THAT'S retro! Ugh.

I would think "Classic" would be more appropriate.

In the motorcycle world there are classic, antique and vintage.

Classic is old, vintage is really old, and antique is so old that all the original owners are dead.

Or "young timers" like used in the classic car domain.

I usually just call then old new watches. Sapphire crystal and white gold indexes. Not really much different from the current collection. :)

Though the charm of 4 digit models cannot be compared to, the 5 digit sapphire (WG surrounds) really are still very very far apart from the modern production IMO.

On the GMT for example, 5 digit sapphire models, many have patina with tritium dials. If the argument is only for the Lumi, then still, holes in the case (up till 2003 I believe), brushed bracelet, and most importantly, gorgeous old proportions and symmetry of the case. Lugs were still decently sized.

Ofcourse there is still nothing like a 4 digit model nevertheless.
