Look for help on this old sub

So my good buddy said his dad inherited this from his brother. Anyone have any opinions on the year? I think it’s a late 70’s or early 80’s model. I was surprised to see the rust in the second hand.

If it has rust on the second hand, it probably has rust inside as well. Needs professional servicing.

A few more photos and a few more comments will be of an assistance .....My comment would be to have it professional checked by a watchmaker that knows Rolex.

Would rust be caused by a bad seal?

the second hand appears to be aftermarket so your guess is as good as mine

I have a 16800 whith a similar rusty second hand, I believe some of the transitional models had issues with the hands degrading and rusting. I have seen Sea Dweller 16660 models with this issue as well.

I would have it checked out to be sure but it’s probably fine.

I see nothing wrong with it other than the corrosion but I am not an expert. I have two 16800’s and don’t see a difference from this one to mine. Why do you think the hand is aftermarket?

I am too lazy to size a picture of mine with the rusty hand but they are on my Instagram feed, Justink1665.

The serial number will give an idea of the year. Take off the bracelet and you’ll see it and the model number between the lugs.

I agree with Springer - looking at a single picture doesn’t say much unless a watch is a bad fake. This one “looks” nice but no way to know what else is going on inside.

It's a transitional submariner date. Matte dial with sapphire crystal.

Age wise, it's from from around 79 to roughly 84.

More photos will confirm the truth, but it looks very nice.

The second hand is fine. This wasn't uncommon. If he plans to keep it, then have it serviced. Do NOT change the dial, hands, or insert.

If he plans to sell it, send me a message. If it's early enough (birth year) I might be interested!

When did tapered tips on second hands appear? This one seems non-tapered to me.

Did you consider taking off the bracelet to find the serial number; which should help date the watch?

Hand appears genuine. I've seen it before and half a few here. The tritium dot is centered more toward the end of the hand than the middle of the hand.

I learned something new today! The position of the bubble and the lack of taper had me guessing. I did a few cross-checks on known sales sites and just made an assumption which as we all know just doesn’t cut it in the world of vintage Rolex

Great images on your IG account Justin

is it not true that you have to threaten Rolex with violence not to change anything on the watch. i have read horror stories about that.
