Position of hands when adjusting date?

Some said anytime as long as its not between 10pm-2am..A Rolex AD once told me it should be in 6:30 position(either am or pm he did not mention)..So what should be the proper hand position? thanks

Left hand firmly holding the case and right hand turning the crown.

Seriously, on a modern Rolex it doesn't matter.

What that AD told that he must have been talking through where the sun don't shine. On any modern day Rolex you can change the date move the hands when ever you want to.

Of course Padi is 100% correct as always.

BUT I must say that I always get in the habit of moving the hands on all of my watches away from midnight before setting the date. I think its just good practice. I have other brands of watches and some older Rolex and you never know which ones might be damaged by this. Better safe than sorry.

It has to do with the gear train that changes the date around midnight. If you have the hands near midnight then the gears for the date start to engage. If you change the date on some movements you can risk damaging the gears.

Like tony said, regardless of the watch just get in the habit of doing this:

1. Put hands at 7 o'clock
2. Set date to yesterday
3. Set exact time and date

It takes 30 seconds and it gets you in the habit so you don't accidentally ruin any of your other brand watches

On instant jump dates you can change time any time. Even the single quick dd.

What the ad said about safe zone is true for nearly ALL ETAs.

If the watch must be at 6:30 when you change the date, how do you set the date on a GMT? Think about it.

Even on quick sets I just advance the hands until the date pops and boom I'm done, figure it can't hurt to cycle things around..

Usually, I have one holding the case steady while the other is just to the right in kind of a fist shape except for my thumb and index finger which are being used to turn the crown until I reach desired date!
