4.8 in Jersey

That was pretty nuts. On with a customer and my building started shaking.

Everyone I know felt it. Chat groups are blowing up etc.

Anyone else on here in the Jersey/NY area feel it?

Was wild. Now I think we know how the West Coast feels.

But makes me think...based on what just happened in Taiwan...what is next?

People are surprised that earthquakes can happen anywhere. They always think it's a California thing but I've lived here 35 years and actually only felt maybe 4.

It's rather disconcerting and feels "personal" and close but when you think about it the ground isn't just moving under you but for a diameter of many miles.

I've been sitting in restaurants when one hit and people all perked up for a second, said, oh that's an earthquake, and just continued on with their conversations. Ho hum.

I hope yours doesn't cost much damage or any loss of life.

I thought it was pretty cool actually.

And none of my customers called me. So all is swell.

Felt it here in Bergen. At first thought it was some heavy equipment going by the house.

It seemed to last about 10 seconds.

A friends house in Walpole MA shook from it, I didn’t notice it, but others in my neighborhood on Cape Cod felt it

The thing with earthquakes is often not necessarily the severity (richter scale number) but the duration.

The longer the rock and roll, the more damage it usually causes.

I grew up in upstate NY. When I was a teenager, the house started shaking. My mom yelled at me to stop jumping around. Turns out there was an earthquake in the Adirondacks and we felt it.

As for today, looks like no major damage or injuries, thankfully.

I work & live in Somerset County, about 5 miles from the center of it. Work they had us evacuate the building until they inspected everything to be safe.

At first I thought a freight elevator crashed as my desk is on the other side of the wall from our freight elevator.

I still haven't been home to see if everything there is good.

A 4.8 quake barely gets honorable mention on the west coast.

My brother in Philly & my in-laws in CT both texted. They both said "I thought earthquakes were a California thing!" Funny enough, I can't remember feeling an earthquake here in San Diego since we've moved here. I did feel one when I was stationed in Washington, though.

Thankfully nothing bad happened, it was short lived but Jersey isn’t built for Earthquakes. Hurricanes too and when those occasionally hit us the aftermath is pretty rough.

Just had an aftershock that measured 4.0. Felt it here 20 miles east of Manhattan!

I’m from Southern California where we don’t even get out of bed for a 4.8, but I wish you all on the east coast safety and good luck. I prefer preparation to luck, so make a plan with your family members to do whatever you deem necessary to stay safe. (Supplies, meeting place, communication, etc.)

In Philly it was not subtle. The 6pm aftershock was felt at my mother's just outside of the City, but we didn't feel that one.

I've experienced 3 earthquakes at home since 1979 and one while visiting Italy. A very strange sensation indeed.

4.8 in Jersey

I’m from the Philly area, but live in FL now. We got texts from people living up there. They were all spooked. A 4.8 earthquake is a big deal for them, rightfully so. But a 1” snow storm is a big deal for people in Atlanta. So it’s all a matter of perspective.

I was driving north from New Jersey toward NYC and didn't feel anything. Maybe I thought it was just the potholes. My son texted me to ask if I felt it. I had to look it up online later to find out what he was talking about.

Yeah, it’s unlikely you’d ever feel it in a car while driving on a road. The tires and motion would shield you from it. Unless you were on a bridge that collapsed. Then you would notice it.
