Err buddies...speaking of Dials with Patina Markers n Hands...

As Hands were made by Hands Suppliers n Dials were made by Dial Suppliers...to Rolex...
For those that do match up...
they don't usually match up in the intensity of the Patina...
all at once...

It takes the right brew of elements n circumstances...
which would caused the markers to deteriorate n change into Patina...
naturally.

However...many Dial n Hands would NOT change at all to have any signs of deep intensity of Patina...

It is OFTEN hotly debated by collectors worldwide...
to find the right reasons or exact facts...
of how these Patina effects take shape...

Until then...the Patina effect shall still remain as a phenomenon to many...
or defect to some...

Therefore...do enjoy every bit of the pleasure it might bring to you...
if your Rolex watches...happened to have these phenomenal Patina effect...

Just to be clear, patina refers to the yellowing of the dial markers?

Anyway, this is what happened to my Uncle's Rolex. Bad picture, but you can see the color of the dial. It turned pink.

yes, it is really strange how some change and some do not. eg my 5513, above, has gone a nice cream colour but my 1680 which is 8 years older is still a sort of ivory white.

is this attributed to the watches environment whilst being worn, different mixes of tritium, different suppliers or what? does anyone have any ideas?

hi orchi, while you're entitled to your opinion, i think you have to be careful about using a term like 'patina'. for me, patina refers to an over-all effect on a dial, and the cases you've pointed out are just the luminous changing appearance. so i would refer to these pieces as having a dis-coloured or aged luminous, but not as having vintage patina. and since in the pieces you've pointed out the dials do seem to be in fine shape you have to wonder whether the problem is more to inconsistencies in the lume formulation than in some kind of aging affecting the dial as a whole. just curious, is there any reason why you write 'n' for 'and'? it makes it hard to follow your thoughts.

Patina is a weird thing and I like extremes if its not bright white than its gotta be puke yellow for me.

Orchi, this is a great thread. I like vintage Rolex watches with some patina on the dial. Its what makes my vintage 1680 etc unique and different than someone else's. The deal breaker is if the hands and the hour markers don't match. I do have a question for the people that don't like a dial with patina and look for vintage watches with snow white markers, what would you do if one of your vintage watches developed some off white markers over a period of time? Here are some of mine.
