My '10 Mercedes cost about $250 for an "A" service which is basically oil change and a few other basic items.

My new Acura MDX is ready for its first oil change. I called the dealer and its only $39.99 !

All these problems and no one has mentioned run-flat tires yet.
I think most BMW's come with them now. I sold my 3 series because of the expense of run-flat tires and the crappy ride they gave. I would never buy a car, other than a 2 seat sports car, with run flats. Never.

You don't even want to hear how cheap my Honda Accord has been to maintain.

The new one comes in tomorrow or Thursday, or so I've been told.

I'm so torn about cars and car maintenance. My mother has a 2000 Mercedes E series wagon that has hit 200K and although she bought used it runs like new, and she hasn't put any money into, and it's a great car. I see all these 90s Mercedes still driving around town in great shape, and I'd love to buy one, even an 80s 300TD.
Then I see these discussions about high repair costs and then I'm thankful for my Scion XA which just feels like its going to run forever with zero issues and my Ford Windstar which I could care less about because it was so cheap - totally boring cars though. I do aspire for a nicer car but how does one balance desire and practicality?

i have a daily beater 2001 Honda Civic EX.

two weeks ago, the aux fuse box went bad together with the heater unit. Brought it in the honda dealership.

here is the break down:

Labor: 2.5 hours $420
Aux Fuse box: $246 plus tax
Heater Control Unit: $276 plus tax

Total: $990.28

Mechanical, Bring it to an independent shop. But if the problem is electrical, no matter if its a Honda or a Toyota, youre going to get raped.

That's $168 per hour.

I don't remember exactly what the labor cost at my Honda dealer is, but I think it's considerably less than that per hour.

My 2007 530i has been a incredibly reliable. I'm nearing 100k miles, and I am thinking of replacing it only because I want an SUV again to haul around kids and stuff. Maybe in the future I will get a 3 series or a low end Porsche for fun.

For do it yourself oil change. Fumoto engineering sells a after market oil drain valve. See them at www.fumotousa.com. Have used them on a variety of cars over 20 years, work flawlessly.

They didn't hook you for the free scheduled maintenance?

I didn't read the fine print, it seems like its a oil change and not much else.

I need to replace my Jeep this spring as I am giving to son. I looked at Range Rover as I really like them, but I kept hearing horror stories about service and maintenance. We already have new 5 series so don't need another sedan.

If I go SUV route will probably stick with Grand Cherokee as I had great luck with mine and it continues to serve us well. If I go sedan, maybe 300E, we keep cars for the long haul so maintenance and service costs are part of equation.

Have you thought about the four door wranglers?

They're called "stealerships" for a reason. I had a '78 320i for five years that were mostly trouble free. That's the totality of my BMW car experience. I do however ride a 2004 R1150RT motorcycle.

I've found a couple of absolutes regarding this marque. The first is that the cheapest thing on any BMW is the rider/driver and that BMW stands for "Bring More Wallet."

One major service on a 911 Porsche = what I paid for 12 years of service costs on my Toyota.

I think my stealer charges 120 euro/hour at the moment.

Just the Vanos test was 300 euro. Well. I'm done bringing my car there.

There is no free scheduled maintenance with AUDI, they try to sell AUDI-Care which is prepaid maintenance at a discount but it's a waste of money if you lease.

Break My Wallet!!

LOL... love how they drive and look but after warranty period is up... I do not want anything to do with them!

Audi has given me trouble lately. I went for a 5k service which is free with my plan, but the next week the Sirius radio craps out. Took a few days but the dealership fixed it.

I did, especially with the conversions from AEV - http://www.aev-conversions.com

I think the AEV modded ones are a little too rugged for my needs, and standard seemed too spartan but I have not sat in one yet to check out, so I could be wrong. Do the 4 dr drive like the grand cherokee?

Probably March I will start seriously hunting for next vehicle.

Yup Audi care (not) that's the ticket. I guess I'm not a very smart shopper. Live and learn.
