Not a tear jerker; but Stalag 17 is another favorite.

Band of Brothers should be required for every high school senior in the country. I don't think the level of sacrifice made by that generation can ever be fully appreciated. Das Boot is a great movie, too.

Yeah, he died in '83. My Mom tells me he won some medal that day, but I haven't looked it up. I remember him talking about being at Ft. Meade before he shipped to England, so historically, that would place him in the 29th ID and on Omaha Beach.
I remember when I was a PFC, the last remaining WWII vet in the Army retired. He was a reserve SSG who just kept re-enlisting and going to drills until he turned 60. He had enlisted at age 17, catching the last few months of the war. I don't think he saw any action. |

Yes, I remember leaving the cinema after watching Platoon (1986 I think it was) and being utterly numb - I had never seen a film like it.
I was only 20 years old and the same age as a lot of the guys who would have gone through that hell on earth. It had a profound effect on me - especially the classical music piece which featured several times throughout the movie. That tune is called 'Adagio For Strings' by Samuel Barber and will be played at my funeral. I have not served in the Military but it is thanks to men like these, of all generations, that allow us to lead the life that we know today. Men who paid the ultimate price to let us sleep soundly in our beds. It makes me feel humbled. |

Apocalypse Now - one of my assignments was with B Troop, 1st Squadron 9th Cavalry featured in the movie. Two favorites that are stuck in my head are "Sling Blade" featuring Billy Bob Thornton (Karl Childers)" and "Leon-The Professional" - Jean Reno and 12 year-old Natalie Portman.
