Sealed 5167A-001 for USD 21.5k

I have to decide in the next 48 hours if I should get a sealed 5167A-001 which would have my name on the certificate for USD 20k + USD 1.5k for insured shipping & customs duties.

Now, I know this model retails for about USD 19k in the US and continental Europe (16k if you remove the VAT in the latter), but it's never available.

I'm very tempted and would like to have some opinions from Aquanaut aficionados.

Thanks!

I really love my 5167 and it´s probably the watch I wear most often. But I wouldn´t pay more than retail price for any watch - no matter how hard to find it might be from an AD.

If you plan to keep it for a long time and wear it often-- I do not see an issue with paying a slight premium rather than waiting a long time. There are certain pieces I would not pay a premium and prefer to wait it out but again personal choice.

I'm not a retail plus kind of guy either, and I won't judge someone who is.

The retail price for this watch used to be $20.9K USD in the US for many years until the 10% price drop back in 2015.

So even at $21.5K, you are probably paying less that what most people paid for at US ADs before the price decrease, as state sales tax added an additional 5-9% to the price.

Doesn't US AD offer free shipping and insurance? My London AD offer free shipping and insurance (include international shipping).

Do it if you really want the Aquanaut. You can spend a lot of time and energy searching for a better deal but maybe you won't get your name on the paper and here you have the watch right away. Consider it a finders fee hahaha.

US ADs may offer free shipping and insurance to a local US customer. However whether they do that for an international customer, it will depend on the AD, the customer and the specific watch.

Good point.

However, the 5167 is not a model that I would buy at a retail or premium.
I had considered paying retail for a 5167 a couple of months back but decided to go the pre owned route and went with the 5164 for a bit more.

Wow, makes me appreciate my 5167, I got about 10% off at the AD and no tax. My name and address on the certificate. I know the 5711/1A is super rare, but had no idea the 5167 market is almost as rare as well.

I personally would not pay a premium for the 5167, I most likely would not have bought it if I did not get the 10% off MSRP and no sales tax as well. But for the 5711/1A blue, I will try to ask for a discount, I doubt my AD will give it, but I will gladly pay retail.
