It was the 1970s, pretty was a foreign concept at the time, just look at the Explorer 2 from back then lol.

I got my first Subbie back then and I seem to remember it as the most beautiful watch I'd ever seen!

Ya but it was designed back in the 50s and continued from there, tastelessness hadn't evolved into a professional sport until the AMC Gremlin came out just before '71.
