Vintage Rolex Question -Ovettone?
I looked at a watch this afternoon that has me confounded? I'm wondering if case was replaced in the 1960s. The case is a 1803 in 9KT with a 6305 back in 9kt.......movement is bubble back automatic. I thought the case was 1953 but then saw the "1" further over to the left which would put it about 1966. I can't find anything on an 1803 9kt case.......anyone have any information? There is a 1982 inscription on the back and the women said it was her grandfather's watch given to her father 30 years ago. Thanks in advance! CC

Here are some pictures I took today. The case number is either 1803 or 1807.....the bottom of the last number is worn. Tested the case just to make sure and it's 9k....crown in 14k.....bezel is 14k.....and 6305 case back is 10k. The case number and serial number looks factory and the case is marked Registered Design about serial number.....also one hallmark on case on the back of a lug. Dates on the back if the case show it was worked on in 1955, 1958, 1962 and a few others that are hard to read. I have found no reference to a 9k 1803 or 1807 case. I know this watch is a mixture of parts but it looks good and the 9k has me baffled. Ideas?

It does seem to be a mix of parts..
The parts seem to be from pre-mid 60's vintage, but I might guess that it was "put together" in '82 for the presentation of a gold Rolex to somebody.

At 9k it likely originated over the pond in Great Britain.

Not 1803 but several cases that would otherwise be 14k in the states are 9k in the UK. In the US, anything less than 10k can't be called gold.
I've looked through my catalogs and the numbers you are listing make no sense to me. I'll agree that it appears cobbled. Good luck! |

So what would explain this 9k 1803 case? Could a dealer have ordered a 9k case from Rolex? Were/are there fakes that would look this good and be marked as a 1803?
