Borneo

Hi, just got a 114060 and I'm planning to wear it everyday and on holiday. I like the idea of it living through life's experiences with me, so whilst I'll look after it, I won't wrap it in cotton wool.

One question though, how safe is it to travel around the more remote areas of the world with an expensive watch on your wrist? For example, I'm going treking in the Borneo jungle in August. Should I leave the sub at home??

Thoughts ???

I know this has been discussed here quite a bit and there are many different view points. I take my watches traveling a lot and whether or not you are safer in the wilds of Borneo as compared to a Saturday night on Bourbon street can be argued both ways. The one thing I will say is when you are wearing a watch in a country where that watch represents more than a persons yearly wage, you are really rolling the dice.

I've worn my 16610 in Cambodia, no problems. There's so many fakes floating around in SE Asia, I wouldn't worry.

Enjoy it. Just don't flaunt it. You be the judge in areas not to wear it or not.

^what he said, as long as its insured you should have no worries. And the 114060 is pretty low key so as long as you are not shouting Rolex, you should be good

It's situational.

If you're headed to an area where it makes you feel self conscious then leave the watch behind.

Just buy a sweatband for your wrist and pull it over the watch when you feel nervous.

Interesting tip. Wouldn't always be appropriate but great idea. Thanks!

Borneo is pretty safe as far as crime is concerned. If you're trekking up Mt Kinabalu or around Brunei, you will be fine, I'm sure. Incidentally, The Borneo Company was Rolex agent for Malaysia and Singapore for many years from the 1950s.

Was a bit tongue in cheek ;) I just hide them under my shirt cuff.

It really depends on the country. I went to Columbia and I wore an expensive watch. Same was true in Naples Italy.. However I wear expensive pieces when i have been in other parts of Italy and most other places in the world including China, Japan, Australia and most parts of Europe.

Under shirt cuff? It is so hot and humid there, u be begging for shorts and shirt. If you are treking or caving in the jungle, bring a g-shock. The compass & altitude function features might come in handy. I wouldn't wear a rolex as it will be more of a distraction. Just be weary if you are a foreigner wearing a well known expensive watch in unfamiliar settings.

Wear it and build some history together

Just use common sense, and you'll be fine!

Enjoy your vacation

Funny you should ask mate!

My wife and I spent two weeks trekking in Borneo in September of last year.....it was a blast and I wore my BLNR for the entire trip - we went from Mt. Kinabalu for the high climbs, all the way down to the rain forest/jungle of Sepilok Orangutan Rehab center in Sabah.

I never felt threatened or overly concerned - like ANY PLACE in the world you visit you just need to be aware of your surroundings....from Europe to Asia and you'll be fine!

Always a tricky one! There are clearly pros and cons, and as it all comes down to the situation at any one time, it is very difficult to assess. If you have a doubt at this juncture however, then why worry? You could put on a much cheaper yet entirely adequate alternative watch thus removing any distraction or worry on your part, and letting you get one with enjoying the trip. Good luck!

Safer on your wrist than in a hotel room.
I've been a lot of places, if you don't stand out like a tourist (unfolding paper map, taking constant pictures, walking in circles, not blending in with your clothing)...you will be ok.

Both Malaysian and Brunei sides are pretty safe. I have been wearing sub and Pams countless number of times over last 2 years.
Be ware of snakes, spiders and insects. Good luck.

Icon20 Just back from Borneo

So after much deliberation, I decided to take my 114060 to Borneo after all. Even though I've only had it for 4 months, it just didn't feel right leaving it at home.

Our family had a fantastic time trekking through the Borneo jungle, swimming in the rivers and snorkelling in the South China Sea. We saw wild Orangutan's and an amazing selection of monkeys, insects and birds.

My 114060 was with me every step of the way. Yes I've got a few more scratches than before (especially on the bracelet from swimming down a jungle river/rapids!!), but they will always remind me of our adventure.

I never once felt it was a liability or had any cause for concern. It flew under the radar the whole time and no one seemed to notice. Perfect :)

Thanks everyone for encouraging me to take it. I'm so glad I did!!

I've taken my 114060 to many safe travels. It's a very low key watch that doesn't scream Rolex. What helps is that it has no date no cyclops. Enjoy.
