1950's OP - NYC service suggestion?
Hi All - forgive me if this is in the wrong section or has been answered before. I have a friend at work that has a 1950's Oyster Perpetual. It needs work done. It was in working condition a few months ago but now is not running at all. We live in Manhattan. Any suggestions on who she should reach out to?
Thank you in advance! |

I would say the first place that comes to mind is the Rolex store on 5th Ave.

Would prefer an independent watchmaker, but thanks.

I have used Manhattan Time Service on 46th and been pleased with the service. It's been referenced previously on the forum as well.

I've had a couple watches with plexiglass crystals replaced, and pressure tested, at watchrepairco.com on 47th St. They were very reasonably priced and pleasant to deal with. Not sure how they are with more intricate work, but I was happy.

Honestly, you would be better off sending to Los Angeles Watch Works. When looking for a vintage specialist, don't limit yourselves.

Photos help. Reference numbers help.
I'm not in NYC but I do lots of watches for folks from there. Depending on what it is, I might be your appropriate choice. PM me if you like. T |

I'm a longtime New Yorker and a longtime watch nut. I've tried many "reputable" watchmakers for service in NYC, including Rolex Service Center. But I've never been overly impressed with any of them, and I've also had a couple of nightmares. I now send all of my watches to LAWW or ABC. Sure, it's an extra $80-$100 in shipping, but it's worth it.
If the watch is not a high-value vintage piece and the owner is not super neurotic, like most vintage watch lovers, there are a couple of booths on West 47th Street that I've used with success. It's a minefield there, so you need to be careful. But a couple of the places do good work and are very trustworthy. PM me if you're interested in the contact info. |

Manhattan Time Service is fine. Pricey, but fine. I used them for a 6694 and a 5513 within the last two months. Both pieces came back very accurate, pressure tested, respectfully cleaned, nothing unauthorized like polishing done. They handle vintage well. But, again, not cheap. Slight discount for cash.

If you want independent, I've heard a lot of good things about Central Watch in Grand Central Station. Might be worth a look.
