If first Rolex or only watch.. I would go with the modern Explorer. Vintage Explorer if I had a more rounded collection. But that is just my opinion.

Any 36 over the 39. Right up to the 114270.

Having just sold my 214270, I would say go for the 1016.

Nothing wrong with the 214270 but I find the proportions off and while it still carry the Explorer name, it didn't felt like one.

So true. Go buy the current 39mm model, maybe it'll help to get 1016 prices down for folks like me.

Depends on your wrist/hand size. If it's large, a 36mm watch will look like you've borrowed your wife's.

I think this particular model looks best in 39mm. It's not IMO a dress-piece like the DJ which wears better at 36mm.

And... for the record, these 36mm "girl-watch" comments are getting old and are not very constructive.

Seriously! If 36mm is girly, what does wearing a 33mm watch make me?

Anyway...

The 214270 is an awesome modern watch. Not too big, not flashy. It is clean, can be dressy + sporty. The bracelet and clasp are fantastic.

The 1016 is a vintage, so the crystal can scratch, the water resistance is not up to modern standards, the movement is good, but not as good as a 214270.

So personally I'd go for the 1016.
