I've always wanted one of these, but the Daytona wears to small on me.

Myself a big fan of meteorite dials in general you can identify a meteorite dial by its Widmanstatten pattern.Rolex uses for there dials meteorite made from the Gibeon meteorite. Now the Gibeon was a meteorite that fell to the earth in prehistoric times in Namibia. And it was named after the nearest town Gibeon in Namibia now a 232 kg lump was first discovered in 1857 but many lumps between 100 and 500 kg were recovered in the years shortly after 1900 to present time. This meteorite has a very high nickel content, so it's very stable and basically won't rust. And the main cost is not so much the material around $5-$6 a gram for top quality slices. The reason meteorite dials are not say on watches like the SS subs first low material supply, plus the labour process costs to produce and polish a almost perfect dial that takes quite a bit of time for every single unique pattern dial produced.

I have a very basic Rolex "collection", but I have over the years tried on or viewed just about everything they make in DD, DJ and Professional line at various AD's across the US.
The meteorite Daytona is my favorite of all, including the platinum Rolex model. As Peter notes, a unique dial for each watch. Stunning! If you haven't seen one in person, try to do so, just to see it. Pictures truly do not do this model justice. |
