Sounds like he was a customer at one of them and they still wanted to nickel and dime him.

Ok so let's say you've had lunch 4 times in a restaurant. Each time they gave you an extra free drink. Does that mean you can pop up a 5th time just to get a free drink ?

I think it is a little different, but I will say I think the analogy is pretty cool.

If you held 4 large banquets at a restaurant, then stopped by a 5th time for a free drink, they very well might give it to you. But not to be expected.

Why is it necessary to call around for prices for that service?

If I take the position of the sales assistant, I'd know from someone calling, that he never bought in my shop. If he's one of my clients, why does he have to call?? He comes to the store and gets the links removed for free!

Now the random guy who bought elsewhere and calls for prices, I can handle it 3 ways:

1. charge the unknown client for that service and $20 is appropriate
2. charge nothing and try to get the client buying from me for the next time
3. "we don't tell prices over the phone"

If money doesn't change hands is there liability?

Or "Sorry I damaged it but there was no charge".

If you are going to be cheap and cry about it do it yourself and call it a day.

The most important part, no damage was done with my sizing!

I wouldn't trust an AD to size my golf hat.

I don't see a problem with this. You ask for a service, you pay.

I went to my nearest ad yesterday to just browse. While I was there I mentioned my new (used) 14060m was a bit tight. Since it was fully extended a new link would have to be installed. They charged me for the link and installed it and steam cleaned my watch for me at the same time all for the cost of the link. And let me try on a few new watches.

Thankfully I bought something from them and gave them my name and phone number to get in their database as they called me about an hour later asking if my 7 year old had left behind the book he was reading and had set down which they found.

My AD, whose family has been in business over 100 years, never charges a client with a Rolex anything for simply sizing the bracelet.
Nor do they charge for changing batteries on most watches.

The family has been trained to "make a friend, not a customer". He has told me personally that good deeds are remembered forever.
