And the other side of the coin....

A different approach for a different kind of watch.

This watch comes from a young serviceman up the road a bit. It belonged to his uncle who was also military and served in Korea and Viet Nam. This watch was basically found amongst his belongings. The young man's aunts decided he should have it and so I was contacted through referral to look after it.

This watch has only seen one maybe 2 servicing in its life. Only one mark in the case back. It is absolutely as it was when it was made.

So...after speaking with him we decided absolutely just to make it serviceable for him and do nothing to alter any aspect of the watch excepting a new plexi. The original is retained for safekeeping and history.

First of all what a fantastic specimen. Not babied but really in miraculous condition. The patina is out of this world. On this one...I just wouldn't touch a thing. It's too cool the way it is.

He has the original Swiss oval link Jubilee band but it had broken where it joins the end piece and one end was missing. Rather than go to the expense of repairing it and searching an end, he really prefers the watch on a leather strap anyway. The ever changing tastes of young men. :-)

So that too goes in storage and we get down to the watch.

The first seven photos show the watch as it came....in various stages of the tear down. Parts laid out after tear down before cleaning.

Next the base movement serviced.

Then in the case with autowind in place.

And the finished watch with new plexi installed.

As I told him...this is the type of watch you would love to buy if it came up for sale.

I hope it serves him well as he serves our country.

Very nice. I just purchased a 1956 Datejust, 6604. Great watches that you don't find often.

Beautiful Tommy, fantastic job on the dial and hands. Bet there are some unbilled hours work in those. :)
