Hello, I currently own the 39mm Blue Oyster Perpetual, and also the latest Explorer with the bigger hands and lumed 3,6,9 released at Basel last year. Although they are similar, what drew me to getting both is the general esthetic and look of both. To me they exemplify elegant understated simplicity in a robust watch that can go anywhere and do anything. The size is perfect on both for my 6.5" wrist, and I prefer the clean symmetrical no date looks. My wife fell in love with my Blue Oyster so much, she went and got herself the Grey dial, I am attaching side by side pics of all of them.

I bought a 39 OP in blue when it first came out. After a while I got bored with it and traded it towards a Sub. I just picked up a new Explorer and like it so much more than the blue OP. I think it has more character.

The Rolex crown at 12 o'clock and lack of numerals gives OP the elegant look that better fits a dressy occasion.

I have always thought of the 39mm OP as the dressy, elegant version of the sporty Explorer.

If I had both:
wearing a suit? I would wear the OP.
Going to a bar with friends? Wear the Explorer.

Their bezels also are different. Quite radically different in overall style when seen in flesh so there shall not be much issue in choice.

I got the new Explorer I and II polar. Even though I love the Exp I, I must admit that I prefer the Exp II polar. It's just beautiful.

I own the Explorer 39 and the OP 39 in blue will be my next Rolex. Clean dial, no date, fully brushed bracelet...perfect. Elegance in its simplest form.
