One space is proper when using a computer... two spaces was only for typewriter generated documents.

There isn't even a debate about this... all major style guides (APA, Chicago, AP, US GAO) say one space.

This. I've worked in publishing and journalism for 25 years, from the proofreading desk to the editor's chair, American and British publications, and have never known a style guide to say two spaces after a full stop.

This is what I learned! I'm coming around on the spaces, though. Damn auto-correct on phones.

Proportional spacing in word processors has killed the need for two spaces after a full stop, but I see no reason to change what has worked fine for 40 years.

Guys, despite the variety of opinions this is really not subject for debate.
One space is correct after a period. Not just acceptable, but correct.

It's called writing style, not writing law. Two spaces is as correct as one in many settings.

Agree to disagree. Style is fine if it's handwriting or content. Punctuation has rules, including proper spaces.

Not going to debate.

I've always used one space. I've had a PC since I was 5 years old, so I grew up typing on a keyboard. Until I read this thread, I had no idea that some people intentionally used 2 spaces

I learned two in college. Some scientific publication submissions needed two at that time as well. And, the US Army style guide required two while I was in. The two space style was pervasive.

Proportional spacing fixed any need for two spaces, but my iPhone will automatically terminate a sentence with two spaces. Why change now?

One, two, or no spaces after a period?

One normally for me. However, been experimenting with two. Both work fine.

My phone and iPad also do this. By tapping the space bar twice, it will add a period and a space.

Proof that two spaces is the correct answer. A 100 billion dollar company can't be wrong.

And TRF will remove one of the spaces!

27. I always use two spaces when typing. (Probably learned it when I started using computers in second grade.) I think it makes things easier to read. That said, I don't mind when I hit double space on my iPhone and it autocorrects to a period and a single space. But whenever it's longer prose, I like the second space to separate the sentences.

Always 2 was the way I was taught many years ago and I still adhere to that rule.

I use one. Two is wasted space. One looks and flows better.

Always 2, unless the MS word grammar nazi gives me a blue line to change it.
