How to find restoration projects

I love the before/after threads of vintage Rolexes that are brought back from the dead. It's the sort of project I'd love to take on (or find the right watchmaker to help). However I've never encountered a Rolex that's in such destitute condition. Searching eBay and Craigslist turns up nothing. Is there a secret? Anyone care to share?

Thanks!

My local craigslist is worthless. I have found several on eBay, but that's always risky since you never know how bad it actually is until you get into it.

I would stop by your local mom/pop jeweler stores and tell them what you're looking for, and explain why you're buying it and that you'll take it in whatever condition. Then stop by again, and again, and again the next month. Eventually one of them will call you, especially if they realize they can make some fast money on a quick flip to you.

Be sure to let them know your realistic expectations. Also be prepared to buy a complete dog from them the first time out, and possibly overpay a little for it (otherwise you probably won't be called again).

Estate sales are a source. Watch shows are another.

Good points. Local auctions might have them occasionally (mine does once or twice a year).

I have found them on ebay, found one here, found some on other watch forums.

You have to be careful though...lots of scammers out there. I ran into several scammers in the last 6 months. None of this forum but on another popular watch forum.

Found a decent 1675 in a small antique shop a few years ago. Needed work but was priced appropriately. With Rolex it is hard to find really good deals below market value but sometimes you get lucky.

eBay has been a treasure trove for me personally. You can get deals either by sniping auctions at the last minute or (my favorite method) looking for newly-listed buy-it-now listings that are priced at a bargain. You need a lot of patience and luck, and there is certainly risk involved, the latter of which is mitigated somewhat by eBay and PayPal's return policy that is very pro-buyer.

I'm not sure finding a piece of junk is a good approach. You can't (economically) put metal back on a knackered case. I enjoy putting old Rolex back on the street as well but I want a nice watch when I finish so I find good parts; cases, bezels, dials, movements, hands and another old Rolex is saved.

Although some are just for fun. :) This is a 1601 case with a 1570 movement and a 1600 smooth bezel. Always wanted one of these. :)

This is a 1603 case from Afghanistan.

A nice 3035 from eBay...

I have several more in various stages of disrepair but each piece is in as good shape as I could find. You're on the right track, it is a lot of fun.

Every part I have was sourced on eBay.

a quick search...

Not too corroded and that is a hell of a price, maybe a nice first project.

lol, a movement for it...

Well of course you might fly to Sweden and dumpster dive in Jocke's reject bin.

great advice on the above members but the reality is - if you are on this forum asking for sources for project watches.... you're probably too late! :P

Yeah, his before/after restoration posts are totally drool-worthy. No doubt I'm motivated by his posts. I'd love have his set-up.

I live in a pretty big metro area, which should mean lots of opportunity, but also means there are 1000 guys out there (probably with more time and more experience) looking for the same watch. Makes it hard to find that needle in a haystack.
