Probably more like $10,000 even. For the most part, a steel Rolex costs ~64% of its TT counterpart. Of course, the other option is to just raise the price of the 124270

I'd chip in $2-3k more and just get a GMT II.

I don't understand why anyone would part with $15k for this. just because it has 'rolex' written on the dial?

or, for that money, I'd get a Grand seiko GMT and a Zenith chrno. prob will end up with a couple of grand left over still.

its a nice looking watch but not at $15k. To me there are so many other watches I'd rather have at that price point. Id pay the premium for a Polar white explorer II grey before I'd pay $15k for that one.

There used to be a time not long ago when 15 grand seemed like a lot of money. Now folks just throw it around on watches with 50% markup. Crazy times. Too much free money floating around right now. We are headed for serious inflation and a hard crash in the not too distant future I believe. Now is not the time to vastly overpay for a watch.

Chrono 24 should display sold prices, that would make everyone’s life a little more relaxing.

C24's mission isn't to create a relaxing atmosphere for global watch enthusiasts.

Exactly. C24 collects its commission from sellers, so that's whose interests must be prioritized. As a long-time investment banker once told me: "The 'client' is whomever is writing your check. That's who you're working for." So, C24 is incentivized to help sellers, and displaying sold prices wouldn't do that.

However, if you add watches to your "collection" on C24, it gives estimates on what you could sell them for, which I would presume is based on sold data, not current listing data.

Someone will always bite. I couldn't do a TT if it was offered at a big discount below msrp.

I just can’t make sense of who wants this watch at all, at any price. The SS model, sure. But not this.

Thanks for another look what the grey is doing post. Does everyone understand that you can ASK for whatever price you want? It's not actually the SOLD price, but just in case some chump will pay for it that's the reason it's there.

Looks like it’s been sold. I’m not surprised. Anybody on this thread buy it?

Sadly, that's what I used to say about MSRP

Or someone at DSW looks at TRF and marked it sold to create the illusion of a $15K price for this piece and we all now accept it, along with other grey dealers?

Or someone called, offered them $11,000, negotiations ensued, a deal was struck at $11,900 and the watch was marked as "sold" (unlike real estate, no public record of the sold price is required).

David knows the market better than anyone. On Chrono 24 price range for the 124273 is $14K-$17K. .

I added an "unworn" one to my "followed" watches, and it estimates around $15k. At the same time, I think, in general, the new 36mm Explorer isn't moving very fast on secondary market. I also follow the steel version and there have yet to be enough sales to give an estimate...

It's no more nutty than a green sub going for $20K+, or a steel GMT for $20K+, OP's, etc..

Some of it has to do more with “setting” the market price than “knowing” the market price imo. We are at the point where if DSW says x is worth y, well then it must be true especially if other greys have the opportunity to price match up.

The irony is that it seems far more of these have changed hands on c24 than the stainless (I "follow" both and there's "not enough data" to establish a price estimate on the steel version).

Better off with a TT DJ.
But if 15k is high for a gold watch what does that say about 25-40 for stainless "steal" watches named after chinese marsupials, comic book characters or a can of ******* soda?

Those days are long gone when a Rolex Submariner at retail was just 20% more than a standard Omega Seamaster. Rolex is now a luxury watch manufacturer and have out-priced themselves from the average watch consumer. Not many average income folks will get $10K watches for graduations. More likely, a Tudor or Omega perhaps at $3-$6K. Rolex MSRP have increased way beyond inflation in the last twenty years. In the past, military folks could afford a nice Rolex Sub or GMT through the PX. Not so for a long time. More likely, you’ll find TAGs and Casios and an occasional Omega.

Regarding the Explorer 36 SS and TT, it is really for a true collector IMO, or someone who prefers the more vintage proportions with a bit of presence. The Explorer has a very smaller and distinct collector group even within Rolex collectors. It always has been that way. (And if it was geared towards the Asian market as some have suggested it would have a green dial, or be in Rose Gold if it was for ladies or your grandmother.) I have a Sub, a GMT BLRO, and some others and this is by far more classic. Funny, the vast majority of the haters have never even seen one in the metal I’m sure.

I picked my 124273 up at my AD and I dig it.
Well the PX’s stopped selling them in the 90’s. My wife’s TT was about half a Captain’s monthly salary and would be similar today.

My favorite: $36K for an SS Daytona worth $13K. Now that’s insanity. And we know more than a few folks on TRF paid that price. .

It's a new release, so of course there is an initial spike. Nothing new with Rolex for many many years. I do think that within a year discounts will be readily available on this one. But, what do I know? Not much....
