They should clean their dials. No need for all that text on dials. So yes, I would suggest those texts to casebacks.

Yes; I believe that's one advantage. I put a Thomas Preik (Custom Watch Concepts) sapphire display caseback on my 16710.

I actually find myself admiring the back of the case. It's a great vantage point to admire the pleasing machining and assembly of well fitted parts, clean lines, and angles. Something i think Rolex does well compared to most other makes.

And no i did not form this opinion just to be disagreeable. Mthey are my genuine thoughts, fellow Rolex enthusiast.

Do Rolex have the worst case backs ever?

Why don’t they engrave this on the skid plate?

That’s your answer methinks.

But I will give a shout out to the Rolex choice of brushing our casebacks. My “new to me” Calatrava’s exhibition one sticks to my wrist-top at times of high humidity there. But none of my Rolex ones have done that.

Same here. If I had a clear caseback I would look at it for a few seconds prior to putting it on and then not think about it till I took it off which could be weeks or months later when I rotated to a different watch. And the maybe I look at it as I put in back in the watch case.

So meaningless extravagance to me.

Somewhere on that skid plate, there will be a three pointed star.
Mercedes-Benz mark all components,.... somewhere.....at least they used to.

I realise the counter argument to this is that you don't see often. But a sign of manufacturing class, attention to detail, ARE the little touches you only notice on the rare occasions. My G-Wagon has them everywhere.

Anyone else feel like a Rolex crown, or a stamped "Rolex" nameplate would have added something to the aesthetic?

Or are you a party at the front, business at the rear, kinda watch owner?

I must agree that I was kind of surprised to discover the first time I started looking in Rolex brand that most casebacks are void of any engraving or design. First I thought those are fakes :-)
Then I kinda forgot about it and accepted the fact that it’s what it is.
To my surprise and luck :-), the one Rolex that fit my wrist the best and fell in love with happened to have a beautiful engraved caseback, the SD43.

If you want a clear case back you can get a Fossil.
If you want an engraved caseback Seiko does some nice ones.

I’ll have only had vintage Rolex watches. Are the caseback plain? Yes. Are they boring? No. I love how the vintage pieces get a mirror finish to the caseback over time. Think it’s lovely.

The Rolex case back is the most comfortable case back! No ridges, no engraving, no uneven surfaces, more comfortable!

I would say it's a kind of Rolex way. Clean. I like it.
As I like the case back of my other watches (engraved and/or movement visible).

In my eyes Rolex has always been a utilitarian watch, so a plain caseback makes a lot of sense. Anything else would be a gimmick.

It's perfect as is today. It allows people to e.g. engrave it if they want to. The engraving can be the simplest things to the more complex true hand crafted stuff.

I prefer the Rolex plain version.

I appreciate the solid case backs on the PM models. The extra weight and value of gold/platinum is better than a sapphire view of the movement.

Agree with OP. Clear case back is a pretty neat feature on my Omega. Rolex doesn't do everything perfect and other brands have cool features that Rolex lacks, but as long as people will line up to pay double MSRP, what do they care? Just keep pumping out what works.

That wouldn't leave anyplace for the traditional engravings that most gifts and special occasions get.

You could have dragons or rainbows engraved on yours to make it interesting.
