Thoughts on the Basel 2018 - Day-Date 40 Meteorite Dial

Hello everyone,

Been thinking more and more about the Day-Date 40 in White Gold with the Meteorite Dial and Diamond Hour Markers from this year's Basel 2018.

In person the watch is stunning and I was actually shocked how beautiful it is. It is perhaps my favourite amongst all the 2018 launches.

I have always thought about the DD, but haven't really envisioned pulling the trigger on a PM Rolex simply on the basis of my own "value prop". I generally prefer SS models as the metal is subtle and I can branch off to other brands at various price points. This watch with all it's "extras" for me PM (although DDs are PM only), Dial, Markers, does and does not at the same time lend itself to being a subtle piece. But heck, I just like it.

I just want to hear from some members what their thoughts were:

a) about this watch as a whole (and DDs with these special dials);
b) better to source it at a later date when the novelty cools off / potentially a better value can be had via either the AD or pre-owned/grey?
c) with the Canadian MSRP of $53,800... should I just buy something else or a different DD in white gold while pocketing some cash?

I'm not in a rush to make the purchase... (and I frankly haven't heard any ADs receiving a non-sample piece yet). Thought I would get some questions I had out of the way in case something does come up.

This is the first time I've seen that model; hadn't heard about it previously either. The photo you posted is gorgeous. A little big for your wrist in my opinion, but don't listen to me if it calls to you.

It's the earth and sky combo. I like the idea of those diamonds having spent however many millions of years underground and the meteorite having spent however many millions of years in space. You can't put a price on that, or I guess you can. It will fall like a meteor to the earth in the used market.

Wow, this dial was introduced on the hush. And here I thought I knew every dial option for the DD40. Find the meteorite very cool.

I hear yeah. I’m okay with the size and the pictures always make my wrist smaller than it is. Should’ve gotten more pics of it when I had the chance.

I’m partial to the meteorite dials myself. You won’t be sorry, and you might still be able to find a 118239 if a smaller dial would suit you better.

The watch is gorgeous in person. The reference was on the Basel tour this year, that's when I tried it on. I'm not really a diamond guy, but those baguettes against the Meteorite Dial is truly a work of art.

If you are interested in the reference, I'd give it time to "cool off", as it just came out, and probly search for it on the grey market later on down the road for a better deal.

Buy a WG day date 2. Youll save a fortune.

It's funny...I was just saying in another thread yesterday I have seen no incomings or discussions on this watch from this year's Basel pieces. I've always appreciated the meteorite dial (a cooler, more masculine version for those who like MOP, in my opinion) and this piece was jaw-dropping when I saw it at my local ADs Basel event. I particularly like this one has no numbers on it -- diamonds aren't my thing but I think it works well here.

Exactly my thinking. I like how simplistic the dial is. Nice and clean, just has the usual Rolex text and nothing further around the edges. Wasn’t a big fan of the older version (although it also a nice piece) with all the numbers and boxes, etc.

It's a beautiful watch for sure. I'd wait a while for any hype to die down and see what kind of discount you could get or pick one up on the secondary market.

That one in the op with the baguette diamond dial is the bees knees. My lord what a beautiful thing. The meteorite dial is the male equivalent of a mop dial which I love but wouldn't dare pull off because it seems feminine. This on the other hand is magical, and that's judging from photos which surely do this watch no favors.
Definitely, grail territory for me.

Exactly how I felt when I saw it in person. Just a work of art that goes really well. I really dislike diamonds on watches, but for some reason this one just works.

That is nice. Really nice.

If that's the one you want, go get it. Getting something else to save some cash will not work. Good luck.

Reading your thread I'm thinking O no no no, but then seeing the photo I'm like Oh ya. I know I couldn't pull that off but it's gorgeous and very much A statement piece. A lot to love, why not.

I was also very impressed trying this one on at my AD event recently, it's the sort of reference that I'd probably just skip past on the configurator but in the flesh it's stunning.

From a distance it didn't grab my attention because it doesn't have much contrast but as I got closer the details are beautiful.

However for the price I'd go a little further up and get a platinum 228206 without diamonds.

I have a 7 1/4" wrist for comparison in this photo.

It seems like there has been some pictures around posted of people seeing this model at their AD releases event, but who has actually seen a retail one for sale, and has anyone bought one?

My AD has one, I've tried it almost every time I've been in and it's drop dead gorgeous. The price tag though... ouch!
