Watch Stopped

I sold a Tudor Black Bay 79230R to a friend of mine's son a few months back. They called me the other day and indicated that the watch has completely stopped, won't respond to a manual wind or oscillating movement. The dad, my friend, is a WIS light kind of guy. So I believe he has a handle on the automatic movement. I have already made arrangements for them to ship it to my preferred AD, who has an in house Rolex tech. I believe the watch to be under warranty, but I feel responsible to help them get this resolved. Ultimately I believe this will work out ok, but I am curious what would likely cause the watch to stop responding to both the rotor and the manual wind from the crown?

Could be so may things
Crown left undone and water ingress ?
Drop on a hard floor ?
And the list goes on
As it’s under warranty I’m sure all will be fine.

Could be a very simple thing like a movement screw that came loose and is blocking the balance wheel, quite a common problem actually.

Wait until you hear the report from Rolex. He should be able to provide you the cause of the issue. Not cool if your friend damage it and making you pay for their negligence.

Thanks all. I feel comfortable saying that if this was a case of negligence they would have told me so. They have indicated that the watch is well taken care of, almost babied. I believe them in that they are good friends. I like Bas' answer, in that he works on them. I will update as soon as I here back.

If it’s under warranty why don’t they take it in and have it fixed?

If it was knocked about, it is not a warranty issue, it is damage that would not be covered.

With luck, of course, it is an easily fixed warranty (manufacture) issue.

Just received word from my AD, apparently not a simple fix. Off to Rolex....more to follow.

Does he work near an enormous electromagnetic field? Does he hold his wrist in front of a microwave oven for extended periods? Has he recently visited Chernobyl? Is he a competitive bulll rider?

Just spitting balling a few options...

I won’t sell any mechanical item to family/friends for this reason.

Pretty sure this is not a Chernobyl situation. Other than that, could be anything.

If it won’t wind through the crown or the rotor, it could be a broken mainspring.

Update:
Received word back from the RSC via my AD. The repair will be covered by the warranty, but it requires an undisclosed part that is on backorder for approx 10 weeks.

It’s good of you to take care of this for them. Even though they assumed the risk when they bought it, you’re a good friend for handling the repair.

The first part is reassuring...
...the second part - 10 weeks - is not.

How they run out of parts is beyond the realm of a top-notch vertically integrated organization.

Watch repaired and FedEx'd out yesterday. Beat the 10 week advertised window by a good bit. For the record we sent the watch in as head only. No issues from the AD, no issues from the Dallas RSC. All good.

No description of defect. All we know is it was broke and now its not.

Unfortunately, that exactly!
Even if you warn them, it's perfect, it's now yours, I'm not responsible... They can always make you feel bad about it :(

It's quite often like that when its a warranty fix in my experience. Your not paying so you don't need to know i guess is how they see it. I've had similar with cars, bikes etc.

It's like selling your old car to a friend, don't do it! I'm sorry you learned the hard way that you should treat watches the same way. You will always be responsible for it's performance when selling to a friend. I wouldn't get involved, just send him to the AD, he's a big boy and he can take care of it. Otherwise you will have to be part of the solution too!
