Did I get other brands due to Rolex’s unavailability? To be honest, yes — I buy watches that I like. Apart from Rolex, I buy other brands with great aesthetics (symmetry dial, date placement) iconic (anniversary reissue/semblance) or with interesting movement (coaxial, spring drive) that will add variety to my collection.

Not because of the shortage, but I have acquired a speedmaster sapphire sandwich, nomos Zürich weltzeit (about to pick up), and a Cartier Tank solo.

I still own a milgauss, explorer MK2, and no date six digit sub. Love them. I think the AD shortage is relatively temporary, and I plan on riding it out. I do not, however, plan on paying some of the exorbitant gray market prices for pieces I want. Not on any waitlist currently

I've bought 2 watches as a result of the shortage...

When I was just getting into Rolex about 2 years ago I naively walked into a NYC AD asking for a SS Daytona. They told me a "10 year wait list" aka go away. I weighed going grey but in the end got so frustrated I walked into the AP boutique and bought a 26331.. The blue face RO chrono. I got extremely lucky b/c I walked in and bought it..seemingly overnight after that those became a very hot watch and it now trades above list.

I then started building up a relationship with a non-NYC AD and bought a Breitling BO1 Heritage II Superocean chrono. Really enjoy that watch.

The story has a happy ending because in addition to those two watches my AD has come through magnificently and I've been able to get a 116500ln (black) and the new Batman.

I haven’t switched to other brands but had a look at lower-key models such as the OP. I ended up buying a white-dialed 34mm and quite enjoy it. It’s my daily these days. It makes for a great change from my Sub, GMT and Exp II. The small dimensions combined with the newer, beefier cases fit very well my smaller wrist.

Somehow, the whole situation has slowly put me off buying Rolex. I’l keep what I have, but that’s probably it. My next target...the new 321. Mind you, that will have a wait list too.

I've been looking at several Omega and really like the Aqua Terra 150 8900 movement. I like the design of the dials and a good looking watch.. Just looking for now...

I bought a new Speedmaster because of the Daytona wait list. It made me mad to even think about paying $11k for a used Daytona. (Oh...This was in 2008) :)

Considering getting a Ball.
I like the looks, the price, the availability and the lume.

How many of you have actually purchased a non-Rolex because of the “shortage”

Edit: Wrong thread.

Weirdly enough no. Besides debating on an apple watch.

I've looked at Omega, Grand Seiko, Tudor and none of them fit my taste.

I have a Steinhart Ocean One 39 on the way. Reviews are solid and I'm pretty excited about receiving it!

Couldn’t find a Tudor BB58 on a bracelet so bought a breitling instead. Truthfully I don’t regret it.

Paul, I miss your insightful and often thought provoking posts. Your unique slant (and sometimes outrageously funny) thoughts are always fun to read.

As for me, no I haven't compromised or settled for something I really didn't have my heart set on. Truth be told, I really don't buy a lot of watches. I also don't spend a great deal of time thinking about the crazy watch market place. It's simply something of which I have no control so why stress about it.

Just picked up a new Omega Seamaster this week. Would I have bought it if I’d been able to get the LV I’m on list for? Probably not but I’m actually quite glad in a way as I genuinely love this watch and the lack of Rolex supply has forced me to look more closely at other brands I was ignoring previously. My collection is much better for it. Fortunately I already have a BLNR and Explorer which is enough Rolex for me really. Plus it’s nice actually being able to go and try different watches on, take your time figuring out what you want and then being able to purchase the one you decide on and having it on your wrist the next day. It didn’t feel as desperate as chasing after a popular Rolex and was actually a pleasurable experience. I’ll still get the LV if I ever get the call though!

Oh and obligatory pic. This thing really does give the sub a run for its money. Plus it’s blue which is awesome!
