Greetings from Brooklyn, NY

Hello, everyone!

Based in Brooklyn, NY, I'm a neophyte to all things Rolex. I inherited my father's watch, a GMT-Master, prior to his passing in 2014. I tucked the watch away for several years because it was a painful reminder of losing my father, but recently, I began wearing it on a daily basis to stay connected with him.

I have a plethora of questions surrounding the watch, especially after visiting the Rolex Service Center on Fifth Avenue to inquire about servicing it. Thus far, the expertise that I've seen in the forum is awe-inspiring, and I'd like to take advantage of that knowledge in a separate thread before I take any further action on the watch.

I apologize in advance for the inexperience on my part, but in the process of learning more about the watch, I hope to keep my father's memory close to me.

Thanks!

Tom

Welcome, Tom.

If the watch is an older 5 digit, you may want to consider NOT sending it to a Rolex Service Center. They "typically" want to restore old <read: VALUABLE> watches to like-new condition. This will destroy all the patina and history the watch shows (from normal wear), plus destroying the monetary value as a highly prized collectable.

When the time comes for service, FIRST talk to Phillip Ridley. He is a renown expert <highly regarded here at TRF and in the watch-service world> for servicing vintage Rolex and will not destroy intrinsic/sentimental value.

You can talk to him first and go from there.

Record this information for future use:

You really need an expert CW21 watchmaker such as he to take care of your passed-down watch.
