I use regular octane gasoline in my BMW330e. They recomend premium, but I honestly don’t see any difference in performance or mileage.

I agree with this.

If your car is not rated for premium fuel, you're just wasting your money and probably sending unburned fuel to the catalytic converter where it will ignite.

Catalytic converters aren't cheap.

There's a lot of information here:

I use only high octane in my Mustangs...they need 92 or above to get max H.P. There is a shop that sells the no mix formula gas 97 octane for 3.95 a gallon.....which ive used a few times....boy it smells good....just like when i was a kid in 1964.

High compression engines are prone to detonation. They need higher octane gas. I use Costco high octane in my Mini S as it is recommended although it is not a requirement.

Initial D recommends high octane too.

Cars are set up for a specific type of fuel mixture - it only harms the engine to use the unspecified fuel for your vehicle.

Most cars will run on the 87 octane even those that say 91+ but you may have issues of pre-mature ignition which produces the knocking sounds and can be very harmful for your engine. You will not achieve the performance capabilities of your engine if you don't use the premium fuel it calls for.
I use premium in my vehicles that call for it and even the one that doesn't. On the one that doesn't, I've tracked fuel consumption when using the low or mid grade octane fuel and when using the premium and without fail, I achieve about 10% better fuel efficiency when I run the premium in it.

My BMW is recommended to run 91 min, and '...95, 98, 100 or higher'. I notice quite a big difference when I use 97-98, compared to 95, which are the most commonly available in my location.

It’s required in my vehicle because it is turbocharged. My wife uses regular in her Toyota, but I find there is a great difference between Shell and Sunoco than cheap no name gas.
