I have an opportunity to work for an AD, should I?

Hello everyone, I hope this post is allowed. I am not writing it intending to fish for clients or anything, I just want to get some perspective on the matter.

I have a bachelors in music education and currently work as an orchestra teacher. I love my kids, I love my subject matter, but for many reasons I am looking to leave my field and venture elsewhere (biggest reason being my blood pressure due to the rest of the nonsense going on in the school). I'm sure there are plenty of teachers here who feel the same way that I do, and if you would like to shoot the shit, I'm all about it, however I am very interested in talking about the opportunity that I have been working on for a while.

My fiance and I have a very good relationship with our AD. We are friends with a lot of the people that help us out and go in randomly just for the conversations we can have. I work retail on the side and the purchasing manager ran into me at my second job a while ago and we got to talking about potentially being recruited to work with them. This small conversation has gotten a bit more serious each time we go in, however we made a visit yesterday to check out their jewelry and the purchasing manager asked me to sit down with her and the owner for an interview. We are planning on sometime in the next two weeks.

I know that I fit in well with their sales team as well as their culture. I am a fast learner and know a pretty good amount about modern Rolex (mainly due to the SO's obsession). I like watches and jewelry, and better yet, I love building relationships with people who are similar to me.

I've served and bartended for many years which I equate very minimally to sales, but I've never had a commissioned role before (I believe this shop is base + commission, but I will clarify that at a later date).

I want to hear from jewelers and salespeople. What do you like/dislike about selling watches? Do you have any tips for questions I can ask them when discussing the role? I really don't know, I just want to spark a discussion, really, and find someone I can chat with who knows the business.

Not in sales, but selling a Rolex is pretty easy nowadays. You can't go wrong

Listening is key - that skill will be the hardest to master in the new role.

I think the first thing to understand is that you will also be selling all sorts of things beyond Rolex models. Otherwise you’d starve with the dearth of highly sought after models in the shop.

Good luck on the interview.

I understand your frustration as a teacher.

Your frustration as a Rolex salesperson might be not having the stock that people that you want to help want.

Flippers constantly coming in asking for the same 3-4 models then walking out. Are you prepared for that?

Certainly seems like something you're passionate about. Your experience and skills could potentially make this a great fit. Regardless though I just wanted to wish you all the best. My fingers are crossed things work out the way you want them to.

The baseline issue is that it seems that you are ready to leave your current position. The jewelry sales position might not be the perfect job, or it may well be, however; at the very lesdt it will set you on a positive path in a new direction.

As you can tell from your current job, the people and culture your work provides can be as important as what your are doing.

As someone who has worked in retail sales, it can be a very frustrating business depending on hours, sales goals and management.

Try it out part time when you are not teaching and see what happens.

Listening really is the key in sales. Speak less and listen more.

Also, understand the sublte difference between a customer and a client.

Good luck!

My answer to your question, would be yes

grab opportunities, see where you can go with it, maybe your own rolex AD one day,

you qualified as a teacher, you have an aptitude, teachers have been known to become successful in the private arena, why not you?

As long as you have something to sell go for it. Given current lack of Rolex inventory I would be curious to know what percentage of company's overall sales are Rolex. Good luck!

Where in Ohio? I know two local ADs fairly well. Feel free to PM me and I can give you some input!

Every job has its ups and downs, it's good aspects and challenges. If you really like what you are selling, and can be successful building relationships with customers, then It can be very rewarding. If you give it 6 months or so and don't like it, you can always move on.

Turning a hobby into a job is usually the best way to ruin a hobby.

Is this something you would have sought out on your own and a profession you actually want, or is it just a means to an end of leaving your other job?

It sounds like an interesting opportunity. Why not give it a shot? It would be interesting to be on the "other side" of the counter.

Plus you could report back to us with tips and tricks =)
