Rolex Submariner 1680 Completing the set

Hi guys, I am trying to complete the full set for a 1680 Red Submariner, serial 305xxxxx from 1971.

I have managed to pick up everything here and there and luckily quite cheaply. However, I am still after the elusive Submariner 'waves' booklet (example below). However, I have noticed several sellers who offering 'full sets' for the '71 dont include this booklet. When was it first included with Submariners?

Were these booklets produced before 1972? Thanks

I believe the “waves” booklet came with the red 1680, 5512 & 5513 References and well as the 1665 double red Sea Dweller. I’m not sure if this was used prior to 1971; I associate it with the years 1971 to 1974. Hopefully others will chime in.

I believe you're right. I am also missing this booklet to complete my set. Hard to find and quite expensive as well...

I agree it is very hard to find and quite pricey. So I just want to confirm that it is actually required, if it wasnt distributed with new Submariners prior to 1972 then I can save my money.

I can confirm that the Sub booklet with the waves came with the sets at least as early as 2.8 mil., which was the serial number of my former red Sub.

Mine (2.8 mil. serial) came with the white box with the green stripe. Here's a photo of my set, from Andrew Shear's original listing.

Ok well this is a long shot, does anyone know where I can obtain one of these booklets? I have been looking for around three months now and I only recently missed out on one.

It would be very difficult to find the original punched paperwork if you don’t already have it. I’m not sure that all of these accessories will even add significant value as the set will never be truly complete. Also, I don’t think that booklet holder is period correct for a red sub.

Here’s one in Italian I actually picked up 2 in the last 6 months for about 1/2 the price of this one,1st one was in German ,then I hit the jackpot & got one in English on Ebay UK so there out there but not cheap ,it was as the one thing missing in my set .

I could have gotten and ENG booklet last week, but they wanted $1000USD for it. Is that the going price?

Pretty much the going price. If you have the money I would consider it.
The booklet along with the green tag explaining the triplock are very difficult to find.

By the way, I'm not sure your insert is period correct. From the pictures, it looks like it's a mid fat font. The 4 in 40 is flat. I guess you'll need to locate that as well. I have 3 inserts for mine. A Mk3 fat Font, a mid fat font, and a service insert

Cheers

I had not noticed that was missing... I think you're right though.
The punched chronometer certificate is probably the most important piece of all the paperwork.
In the end though, the watch is the most imprtant piece of all.

I agree; however I can respect the hunt for items that could have originally came with your watch.

Thanks guys, well my thoughts were I picked this watch up for around $9500 USD, so I still had quite a bit of change left over to buy these bits and pieces on the cheap. I am never selling this, so this is merely for my own satisfaction. I have limits to, I wont change anything on the watch as I like it the way it is, but I do know it was serviced once and some parts were updated at that time. Currently for this set, I am in around $11000 USD, so I think I am doing ok :-)

Hi Rolexbound, Just received my booklet today! I got lucky as it's in English as well.

Good luck to you finding yours

I’m looking for the 1680 booklet from 1977. Is it the same wave booklet than for Red letter? Thanks.

Oh wow!! Case back sticker too!! I remember 15 years ago on eBay there was a seller that had these NOS. At the time the price was around $200. At the time seemly a lot of money considering I had sourced a complete set barring papers and case back sticker for around $200..

I've never seen the point in cobbling together a set that didn't come with the watch...I'd feel like a fraud, more to myself than to others.
