5522A Fails

Antiquorum just ended. Many lots going unsold. Some sold with surprising results.

One of the lots I wondered about, 5522A, failed to sell. With a low auction estimate of just under $40,000 USD.

With many of these listed for $45K+ and this model not selling, what is it's true value?

We may never know...

A factory SEALED 5230 - New York World timer sold...for just over $76,000 USD

I was surprised as well with the 5522A.

Surprised with the NYWT as well. Sold for a nice premium over list.

I suspect these continue to come down. With the introduction of another pilot and expansion of the line, this piece just isn’t that interesting imo.

The biggest shock to me is the 5930 World Time sold at under $56k. Also it appears well under half of the auctioned watches sold.

600 is a lot of examples and I think people assume Patek could release a regular production version down the road. A cool watch but not worth 40k imho.

That’s very true but I wanted one to keep and wear and even though I asked two AD’s for one I was turned down. The funny or not so funny part depending on how you look at it is the Patek sales rep knew I applied twice to increase my chances of getting one.

Makes sense to me, buyers premium at the low end would put it over the gray price.

It's a nice watch, but at that price you could get the 5524 with the additional complication. So it really comes down to how collectible a 600 unit SS piece will be.

The low end of the estimate was NOT the opening bid. All the sold prices include Buyers Premium.

Agreed... seller got little less than $40k. I have a Massively bad omen for this reference going forward.

All these are no reserve auctions?

Usually the low estimate is the reserve

its my favorite regular production WT... minus the 5131 series. Go figure

IMO i think Patek needs to embrace the large watch preference most people have and release this as well as other complications that are not selling well in 40mm+ cases. Preferably 42mm for a WT. They can get away with small-ish nautilus's because they are so iconic, but i really think watches that could go bigger need to go bigger. That was my only issue with the 5930, its too small for the amount of information on the dial. The 5230's at 38.5mm are non starters for me.

Patek 42mm isnt big anyway as on a side note i tried on a moser pioneer today and its just shy of 43mm and its was absolutely massive next to my 5524. It was shocking.

Agree. This line certainly has potential, but this brand has to get away from using the same movements and complications throughout all of their lines. Pilot chrono next? Then AC? Then perpetual? It really waters down the punch.

That's what I thought, I didn't know it included buyer's premium. In that case, a decent price for sure.

Too high a reserve usually leave watches unsold and likely happened with the 5522 here. I have seen 5930 available at several ADs in their window display.

Exactly, never understood the hype around this watch, is there a sane person would pay 45k for the 5522 while he can get the 5524 in wg and dual time/date for just 7k more?

If they ever make the 5524 in steel, I would not sleep until I get one.

The results don’t surprise me. Being limited does not in itself make a watch desirable.

That’s interesting. Wasn’t the story that they were for non big time buyers like yourself? I thought that’s what I heard - they were more to hook casual buyers then people like yourself who are already VIP status.

Maybe there is an anticipation that Patek will release another 700 5522A for the upcoming Singapore Grand Exhibition.

Why would you buy the 5522 when you have access to the 5524 at a similar price?

Someone mentioned this above as well, and for me, the 5524 is a much more dynamic piece.

I suspect the 5522 will drop to a number slightly above retail- that's what it's worth IMO.
