DJ 36 or OP 36 - First purchase

Hi there.

Having a hard time choosing between these two models.
The Datejust 116200 36 mm (smooth bezel with Oyster bracelet) and the Oyster Perpetual 11600 36 mm (the 3-6-9 version with smooth bezel and oyster bracelet)
Both are the blue versions.

This is my first expensive watch and I've no intentions to buy another one after this one, so this will be a watch I'll be wearing forever with no intentions to sell later on.
I will wear the watch more casually, not very formal occasions.

Which one do you think will be the best investment for me?
The price for the OP is $4825 and the DJ $6379

Thank you in advance!

DJ if forever watch. The date function will come in handy.

If it's a "one and only", definitely the DJ due to the date function. I'd have a hard time wearing a watch everyday that doesn't have the date function.

DJ 36 or OP 36 - First purchase

If I were looking for a single watch out of these two it would be my OP over the DJ:

Why?
1. The simple Rolex blue 3-6-9 dial without date or cyclops allows the colours to change with the light without disruption.
2. The hands just touch the minute markers (I have a pet hate where hands finish short of the minute track!).
3. I'm not a fan of the white date wheel against the blue dial. At this price point it's a shame that they couldn't afford to produce a blue date wheel to match.
On which point, I can't understand why the new DJ TT with champagne dial loses the old matching date wheel in favour of a white one?
4. The comfortable basic Oyster bracelet - once I bought the new-ish Rolex half link. I'm still not 100% about the welded connection with the clasp replacing the proven, screws and pins of old - or the new bracelet attachment design.
5. The brushed finish that doesn't shout 'LOOK AT ME - I'M A SHINY ROLEX' meaning the OP can fly under the radar and not be a scratch magnet.
6. The same well proven calibre (that I can get serviced anywhere) with insane accuracy - means that with no date I only have to adjust it twice a year for GMT+1 in summer!
Don't get me wrong, the DJ is a fine watch but with the OP I'm also left with quite a few quid still in the bank

The date function really does come in handy so I’d go for the DJ as a one and only daily wearer

I'd probably go DJ but wait a year, when the case/movement will likely receive the same updates as the TT version.

Among current offerings, probably the OP, though.

The prices will also rise if there are updated case/ movements.

Of course, but I would imagine the biggest difference in effective price will be the discounts offered. Looking at the price of the new 126231 in TT SS/RG, white dial, Jubilee bracelet, fluted bezel, and the MSRP of the previous 116231 in the same configuration, the difference is only about $400.

This is one of the best looking watches in the Rolex catalog.

If it were between these two and I wanted one watch to cover everything, I’d probably get this one. If I had other sport watches, I’d probably lean toward the DJ but only slightly.

Thank you for all the answers.
It seems like DJ is the most popular.
I just got a deal on a OP though, a used that was bought 2016 with box and papers.
Some hairlines on the link.
Price is $3766

Is this deal worth it over a DJ?

That would be a hard deal to pass up.
I looked at the exact same OP and the exact same DJ. I went with the DJ for the date feature.
My first Rolex was a no date Sub, but I had owned Tags, Breitlings, and Omegas beforehand. Prior to the Sub, all my watches had date functions. I thought I could do without, but I was wrong. I have to have a date function. But that's me. I do love the OP 36 blue dial.

I like the OP better. Too much polish on modern DJs for my taste.

You can't go wrong with either. DJ 36mm pre-owned can be found at a reasonable price as well, so always a good idea to shop around. Best of luck!

The date function is pretty useful. Didn't realize how important it was to me until I bought a watch without it. I vote for the DJ.

Many on here will tell you that the difference between that deal and a new DJ 41 is worth it; on the other hand, a new DJ is nearly double the cost. Either way, you will have a beautiful Rolex on your wrist, and I get the impression that you will sleep better spending less money. So I think the deal is great.

OP 36 for me.

Failing that, I'd skip the DJ and go direct to a platinum Day-Date 36mm.

Since we’re talking smooth bezel / oyster bracelet for the DJ the only real difference is date function - everything else is substantially the same. I think it boils down to whether the premium is worth the date+cyclops for you. Having said that, I’d definitely go with DJ if it was with fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet but then you’d be paying about twice the price for an OP.

I will choose DJ because it has a date function. Also it has a lot of configuration for you to choose.

Good choice, the 3,6,9 dial is great. On my DJ I put the oyster bracelet that goes with the OP, all brushed and solid links, it’s a great look.
Enjoy your new watch.
