Servicing lower end Rolex

I was recently given a 68273 (Mid-size Datejust) that just stopped running, probably never been serviced.

Should I send it in to RSC even though the cost of service + repair would be high comparative to the value of the entire watch?

As far as local options go, there's:
  • B&B (dunno if they have a watchmaker in-house)
  • a fairly well established dealer (but read some Yelp reviews of scratching incidents)
  • a WOSTEP certified watchmaker (read good reviews but only one review mentioned bringing in an expensive watch)

Otherwise I may just let the watch sit and look pretty haha. Not sure how often I'd wear this 31mm and I've only worn it once before.

Also, not really relevant but this is my first Rolex, or watch that costs above $500 for that matter...whoo

Any Rolex is better than no Rolex. Have it serviced and enjoy.

Just look at the service cost as what you are paying to get that watch. Then decide whether it is worth it or not.

Where do you live? Let’s see if someone can recommend a good Master Watchmaker near you.

I have a 58 year old 1002, that a Master Watchmaker in Herdon, Va has serviced for me (Herdon Clock & Watch) He used genuine Rolex parts, and guarantees his work.

You might also be able to find someone here on TRF.

Peace.

I have a really good watchmaker in town at my AD and I have an amazing watch maker 90 miles from here (only Nomos service center in US, at least as of a year ago). But it took me a while to find them. RSC is always safe!

Servicing lower end Rolex

Rik is an independent watch repair guy on the forum who does great work. Cost is comparable to Rolex. Good work costs. Rolex warrants there work for two years so it’s not a bad deal. It would cost the same with Rolex if it was a Tudor.

Depending on the age of the watch, Rolex might insist on replacing dial and hands which jacks the price up. Not so with an independent.

I'm in Eastern NC and originally from MD. When it comes time to service my 15003, I was thinking of Herndon. The testimonials are superb. Without trying to pry, what would the average Rolex service run from them compared to the RSC?

Congrats ! Wear and enjoy !

“Lower end” is a self derogatory type statement, it’s a nice watch to be proud of !

Send it to a TRF recommended independent watchmaker and enjoy wearing it.

Thanks for the support guys! Will do my homework on getting estimates.

Side note, is it just me or do most people also feel skeptical leaving their watch in someone else's hands? There's a lingering anxiety but I supposed that's what reputable shops are for.

I'd send it to RSC. Datejust service isn't that expensive.

I keep hearing about these "low end" and "entry level" Rolex, but I've yet to EVER see one.
