Icon2 A Project Watch for the New Year

This Swiss-made auto caught my eye on eBay a few weeks ago. Luckily it didn't catch anyone else's, and I got it for $12, with postage bringing it up to $20.

I'd never heard of Gladstone before, but I liked the domed, silver-sunburst dial, the name "Permaspring" and the raised black numerals. I'm guessing it's from the 1960s. It's 34mm but looks like 37 lying flat on the wrist (I've measured it three times with calipers!). Pics don't do it much justice.

Someone before me had a good go at opening the domed caseback, so I won't even try. It doesn't run, but the rotor spins. I'm going to get my watchmaker to look at it, and see if its worth fixing.

Anyway, watch this space and hopefully I'll have it up and running on a new band (I'm thinking Speidel Twist-o-Flex to keep under budget with a vintage vibe ) in a few weeks.

As usual, I have to comment on Arabic numbers!
I absolutely love those, Expat. Very Awesome.
You really lucked on that acquisition.
Congratulations!

Great looking piece Adam. Will be interesting to see what is inside once you get it open.

An ETA 2368 movement? Permaspring Gladstones from the 1960s often have that unique-looking rotor with a slight oval cut-out.

Thanks BC. Have you been researching or were you already familiar with Gladstone?

A little of both. In HS an acquaintance had one of these and when it stopped running, he opened the case back and took the innards apart. Needless to say, he never got it working again.

While Gladstone was a somewhat obscure make, their approach was similar to the 1950s Hamiltons where the company imported Swiss movements for their models.

The German database is something I keep on my 'Favorites List'. A reference source for movements.

Yeah, I have that one bookmarked, too. Thanks for the info. It seems like a good quality watch, if the dial print quality is anything to go by. I'm willing to spend $100 to get it going, so we'll see what happens. The guy I'm taking it to got my old Gammeter going for about that.

Hey Expat

I did a quick look-see (ebay C). Only came up with a 'sold' Gladstone scant description with no picture.

Thanks, I should have it all sorted out before the end of January, I hope - if travelling doesn't hold me up.

Hopefully I'll manage to get it checked out before too long!

This stayed on the back burner for a while, but today I finally got it to my watchmaker, who managed to get the back off with the help of various tools. So it is an ETA 2368, or based thereon, with a broken mainspring, and is currently being overhauled for 'free' as part of a deal on a watch I sold him.

I'll be picking it up early next week.

Ok, it's now back from my watch guy and running near perfect (about one second gained in 24 hours), and temporarily on an old Japanese band I had lying forgotten in a drawer. Project complete

Very cool. I have been tempted a dozen times to pull the trigger on your old project Bulova. Resistance seems futile.
