Hey Guys,

For casual wear, office, dinners and to pair with a steel sports Rolex, which would you choose?

Options:
JLC Reverso Large Small Seconds Hands
JLC Master Control Date

Wild Card:
JLC Master Control Chronograph.


I'm asking for a "friend"

JLC seems to be the best bang for bucket and closest to HH in this price point.

Same diameter, same thickness, but for the same money, you’re getting WG instead of just SS.

As for the Reverso – I prefer the Kalpa from PF and the Vintage 1945 from G-P.

I would personally go for the Reverso but, unless you were going to engrave the back, I would go for the Duo, as it's like getting two watches in one. It's also fairly versatile, as it can be used for a dress watch but also dresses down easily. It and a steel sports Rolex would make for a great pair.

I like the Master Control Date with the sector dial, but the date ruins it for me.

As for the chronograph, I like the GP posted above better and the white gold is a nice upgrade for that type of watch.

Dislike all the sector varieties. MC rdm and moon are my favorites. Reverso is wonderful too. Saw a new tribute in blue, with the Casa strap. Doesn’t seem to have made much noise, but I think it’s gorgeous.

The chrono is very nice.

I had a Reverso which I loved but it was too large for my wrist and I sold it. I would consider getting a small one.

I (and my wife) absolutely hate square/rectangular watches, so anything but the Reverso.

If you’re open to suggestions, I’d abandon all those options and go with an Ultra Thin Moon. You are correct, that JLC offers fantastic bang for the buck. Has just as much history and prestige as the ‘Trinity’ and is widely respected by the entire horological community. Another 2 options (with fantastic bang for the buck) would be IWC (perhaps he likes the Portuguese?) and Nomos. These three brands are always what I suggest to friends wanting to make their first ‘bigger’ watch purchase (along with Tudor if they want a diver).

I own the chrono and love it. So that would be my vote as well. *Full disclosure, not a reverso fan*

When JLC announced the release of the master control sector dials, I thought they were beautiful and was near certain that it would be my next watch. When I eventually tried on the MC date , however, it felt flat and dull , too light and almost “cheap”.

The Master Ultra Thin Moon is the correct answer. The MUT Moon and MUT Small Seconds are exceptional dress watches with tremendous pedigree. They are priced incredibly fairly for what they are. Consider that you can get a fully white gold MUT Moon from a reputable grey dealer for around $14k, and a steel MUT Moon or MUT Small Seconds for around $6-6.5k. These are top-notch watches that will last a lifetime, have extraordinary pedigree, and look and feel amazing on the wrist.

For whatever it's worth, I lead a very casual lifestyle and I'm still thinking about getting one of the steel Master Ultra Thin models with a blue dial because of how fantastic they look in person and feel on the wrist. In my case I'm debating between an AP RO or a DJ41 + a JLC MUT Moon + a Panerai 512 (all at once, versus just getting the RO).

Go with the wild card- the Chronograph. Tried it on myself-nice. In terms of JLC it will stand out, you won't see it on as many wrists as you will a Reverso in the settings that you described.
