Icon5 Unknown Vintage Rolex

Hello,

My great great grandfather left me his watch when he passed and was just wondering if anyone knew which model and year it would be.

I'm looking at restoring it as its been stuck in a save for about 15 years!
Still works which is amazing so just need to clean up the glass and frame..

Thanks in advance..

Pics aren't showing mate ...

... and certainly hold off on any case (frame) and crystal polishing.

A gentle clean can do wonders while a polish can knock off a chunk of value for a vintage Rolex

Dial looks authentic, case does not.
I am guessing that the watch was recased.
Hopefully could tell for sure, with photos of movement and the inside of the case back.
Dial does not say "oyster", so case would, most likely, not have the typical oyster case. But, the writing on the back of the case, I typically only see on lower quality watches.

Very nice. Case is made by Handley, which was licensed to make cases for Rolex and Tudor in Australia many years ago.

Some good info on the company here: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f2/hand...o-1056809.html

So, is it recased or not? To the OP: may we have a frontal picture after the overhaul?

Can't be 100% sure, but my money would be on all original. The dial doesn't say Oyster, so it's basically just a 9k manual of the type commonly cased by Handley in Australia. Unusual to see the Tudor-style "Shock-Resisting" on a Rolex.

Love to see a frontal shot. Who did the service and clean for you?

Also Adam great link about the Handley company, from my "hometown".

I've never seen one of these, but I'm from the other side of the globe. What a cool looking watch! I congratulate you, whatever the verdict.

Thanks guys, Yeah i'm very happy with it.
From what I've researched its an Australian Rolex 1930's - 1940's with the Handel case.

The watch shop i took it to had never seen one either. :)

Amazing result! I'm no expert at all but my gut's feeling is that it's all original.
