Alton Brown’s Submariner for sale

https://wannabuyawatch.com/product/r...al-circa-1985/

Little too much “patina” damage for my taste, though the brown tone is kinda cool.

Doesn’t quite rise to the level of Ralph Ellison’s Speedmaster, but always interesting to see a watch with celebrity provenance.

Not my cup of tea but Wanna Buy A Watch is a very cool store to visit if you’re ever in LA.

I don't get the attraction of buying something that well used. It's like buying pre-chewed food.

Mmm, “tropical” steak, pre-chewed with period-correct “green ghost” mashed potatoes.

(Alton Brown might have opinions about this.)

Does it come with a menu, or just leftovers?

Very cool... Once saw a video on his watch collection.

WBAW also has Howie Kendricks' Tudor 7928 Sub listed.

I guess it depends on the celebrity…I think if that Sub had been Steve McQueen’s there’d be a bidding war.

For sure. To be clear, this was a watch that Brown bought from WBAW a few years ago and apparently just sold back to them. So it’s not like he’s the one who added all the scratches.

I have no idea who Alton Brown is, so to me it's just a really beaten up Sub with an enormous price tag.

I can think of better ways to spend $14k.

I think it looks great but too expensive, unless the provenance is important. Never heard of him as well so not for me.

That dial is so shot. The early gloss dials often don't age well, and that is a prime example of one that has big problems. Calling it "Tropical" is laughable. That implies something good. Also, despite what the listing says, that Sub has indeed been polished in the past. So tired of dealers over-hyping bad examples.

Here's what a clean dial and unpolished example looks like.

Great looking watch and I get where you're coming from Aaron. To me the word tropical always meant defective to be honest, but I never had one in my hands before, and over the years I got used to it. Then I started admiring some brown shades and I ended up buying a vintage eterna with a dial like that. It took me a good time to make my mind though. After I was sure I could triple my money in a blink of an eye if I wanted to I bought it, and now I love it. I think from now on I'll be a buyer depending on the effect/defect. It makes the watch unique.

That's not patina, it's just a moisture damaged dial.

Ripped jeans and sweats sold new…I can see who these watches will be bought by in a few years. It has never been serviced by RSC since Rolex would refuse to return the watch in that decrepit state.

“Pending Sale” buyer probably requesting a signed cookbook or an appearance on Chopped. People even want to own a piece of an E celebrity….sad.

I don't think they are claiming the watch was owned by Alton Brown. My reading of the listing is that they are "naming" the watch the "Alton Brown" because the dial is brown.

Kind of like the silly names that other dealers invent for various types of damaged dials.

No, it was owned by him—see the last paragraph in the listing.

Interesting. I own an HK P7M8 that he previously owned. It is as new in box and no premium was added to the price. Now put these two together and you would have quite the AB collection!

I love Alton Brown, grew up watching Good Eats and I would love to own a watch that was in his collection. Having said that, not a huge fan of this level of "patina", especially at $14k.
