As soon as I finally figured out (takes me awhile I am dumb) what was going on I hunted up the best Kermit, 16710 and 2 liner ND Sub I could find at prices I could afford. This is all in the last 8 months. I could sell them today to retail for what I paid at retail 6 months or whatever ago, maybe a touch more.

Who knows what the future holds, I certainly feel we are in a bubble, but I truly believe the 5 digit stuff is much less effected than the new hotness. If you really want something from 10-20 years ago I'd jump because I do not see it going down anytime soon. My 2 coppers.

I recently picked up a 16710LN from Bernard Watch for 10K. It’s a D serial with box but no papers. I hesitated due to the absence of papers but ultimately decided to pull the trigger because the piece is in absolutely stunning shape, literally almost like new. Sure I wish I would have bought even a year ago.
For me the papers are pretty much irrelevant. They’re only valuable until you get your first Rolex service. From then on what really counts are those service papers. I’m seeing watches with all the original paperwork selling for 12-15 k, some in worse shape than my watch. Ultimately this will be my main watch and I’m really happy I got a 14 year old watch that looks like it just left the Rolex boutique.

i will focus on the case shape as well. imagine you are wearing it everyday and not happy looking at it because the case is in a bad shape. once you got your first service at RSC you will received the warranty service certificate proofing that it is authentic. but still does not matter because your would not sell it anyway.

any pics to share?

Probably I know less about the future of the watch market than anyone, but even merely hearing the words “The price of X can only go up” evokes bad memories.

Agreed, in that eventually, prices will come down. Eventually.

Having said that, I'm sure the prices will continue to rise for a while, and trying to "time the market" is a fool's gamble.

FWIW, I sold a full-set (box, papers, and original receipt) 16710 to a dealer in New York for a little over $8K earlier this year. It's easy to wish I had kept it and maybe sold it for more, but I counted my blessings and moved on. Still on the hunt for that dream GMT!

Waiting for 16710 prices to go down?

I had chance to buy Coke Z serial (3185) no box no papers for $10k. Normally, I would pass, but it looked like NOS and was being sold by Torneau at SDGO store (now closed).

I ended up passing, but not sure if I should have made the purchase.

I have no doubts about its authenticity and the case is flawless. Unfortunately I don’t know how to post pictures on TRF, unlike WUS, where it’s pretty straight forward.

I don’t think we are going to see much reversal in pricing. Of course, as what happened in 2008 when the financial world wobbled vintage/neo vintage and all watch prices will also pull back a little. But that’ll be a temporary pull back.

If you can find what you want, exactly what you want, then paying $500-1000 more than you hoped is in my opinion worth it.

Nice pickup! 5 digit GMT’s rules over the newer ones IMHO

You can use the Tapatalk app to access the forum. It is fairly easy to post photos through the app.

Price is currently inflated but not sure if it will ever go down drastically. Sold my Z serial Pepsi last month as it didn’t get much wrist time and couldn’t grow more on me. The case is perfect and the bezel swap is an advantage, but honestly I find the dial not as inspiring as some other models, and the winding crown a bit small, but it is just me.

I haven’t seen a 3186 advertised with all black bezel before, do they exist?

Not in 16710, but yes in 116710LN (ceramic bezel, supercase and maxidial).

Once a reference is discontinued, it begins to become a constant search for that elusive like-new condition for the collector. At some point, it is no longer the question of how much is the going rate but more if you can find one in the best possible condition.

I think a world economic collapse/meltdown is coming. To make 2008 in the States seem like child's play.

There is way too much debt and speculation going on again. When China's bubble pops, watch out. Chaos. Worldwide.

Rolex prices will be impacted.

I don't think the price of 16170 and 16610 LVs will plummet. Maybe steady out. Level off. Not like the "Oh I should have bought 6 months ago!" that is happening now.

There will be some people that own them that will need cash and sell but these are not being made anymore and good examples with papers will hold their value.

From what i read here (wee pinch of salt), the 3186 (Z or M) isn’t worth the stupid premium being charged. IMHO, the black dial is an excellent place to start. Discreet enough to go unnoticed except when required. Bezels are simple enough to change and you have a totally different watch. They are also priced markedly cheaper than an equivalent aged coke or pepsi.

I think the black bezel 16710 is simply stunning. The contrast between the black dial, black bezel, red GMT hand and 904L steel is just incredibly beautiful. I much prefer them to the Pepsi and even the Coke. Sure they look a bit like a Submariner, but they’re different enough with the different numbers on the bezel and the smaller crown, and they’re mesmerizing to look at.

For perspective I bought my Z serial 16710 (3185) with no box or papers five years ago for $5500. That seemed expensive at the time.
