Are those some scratches on the bezel? Its good to see one getting real use. That bezel really takes the brunt of it.

The good news is platinum is SOO dense that refinishing and polishing will not take much if any material from the case :)

Thats why you pay for Platinum!

well i hope you are right. but the scratches take away little from the watch.
my only issue is legibility, the glass is too reflective. the lume is totally useless.

Does PP not use an anti-reflective coating on their crystals?

i don't know what they put on, all imknow is that it is really very reflective. it increases the shine of the watch, but not legibility

This thing ain't legible at all.

1 year+ after this thread was launched, the 5170P hasn't appreciated ... yet.

I think the scratches look great - gives the watch some character. it's meant to be worn!

Strange, I have no problem with its legibility.

Depends which market you’re looking in I think.

Moreover I’m not sure it matters. At its current price around MSRP or a touch higher here in Europe, I **currently** can’t think of a nicer modern Patek to buy.

The 5170P has appreciated slightly relative to the market price one year ago, but it is still below MSRP (which was really high when it was in production).

Don't care to speculate on it since I'd never sell mine.....but if I had to guess this will one day get the recognition it deserves. Especially when the sports watch hype calms down and people understand there are watches outside of a sports bracelet/water resistance. Truly beautiful watch, one of the best blue dial watches out there for sure.

Hi all,

My first watch post here. Have been looking at this model very seriously. I love the look of it and now that the watch has been discontinued and we live in the age of watch madness, are your thought on this piece the same? It has definitely appreciated some and that’s good for those who bought early. However, I am curious to know, in addition to the watch holding its value, what your thoughts are on the watch itself? Its aesthetics, the diamonds, the blue face, the comparisons to the 5070 (a watch that would not appeal to me even at the same price or cheaper)? Is this a modern classic? Would you buy it in today’s market or wait? It’s a a lot of watch and I don’t mind paying for it, but I would like to know what others think.

For reference, my last purchase for my self was a stainless Daytona $6,700 from AD in 2006. I would probably never sell, I just want something that will put a smile on my face. There is a certain pleasure in having something that is rare and hard to find but it must have an intrinsic beauty and elegance for me to want it in the first place.

Update on this thread

I was just scrolling through old threads on watches I own, and have noticed that market prices on the 5170P has continued to steadily move up. Certainly not in the same category as stainless sports models, but clearly the market is recognizing the value of this amazing piece.

Realized all my suggested options including the 5170P all made money perhaps besides the 5070.... This thread aged well...

It is also hard when there is so much competition vs. Lange Datograph (39 and 41mm platinum), against the 5070G, against the 1815, and other manual wind chronos.

Remember, Patek made ALOT of 5170 in all variants. I don't have the production numbers but you can find the G or R or J at most Patek ADs (I visited about 10 Patek ADs in 2018 in Japan, Taiwan, Shanghai and several in the US and every one had a 5170 and 4 had the P). The P also was being traded at wholesale in the mid 60s at the low point.

However, one must admit that the watch is stunning. I myself would love to own one but it doesn't yet pass my value retention test compared to some other watches on my list.

Finally at mid 70s, here are some options:
1) Patek 3970 (do I need to say anymore?)
2) Patek 5070J or R or G with probably about 15k left to spare
3) Lange Datograph 39mm (Dufourograph) + 30k to spare
4) 1815 limited edition Lange Chrono + 30k to spare
5) Lots of vintage watches

Good to hear as the OP of this thread but no way I will sell this.

It’s an awesome piece but I’d love to trade it plus some cash for a 5370p black.. sadly missed that boat.

Quoting myself here after I came up with this thread randomly. I have had mine for over 2 years now. I think this may be another forever watch for me.

I find it a very versatile watch and I wear it with shorts and a t shirt or sweats and a hoody. I think it dresses things up nicely. If I want to get dressed up, jeans and a button down really goes well for me too. I just saw John Mayer do the interview with Ed Sheeran and I get their passion and was struck by how they are comfortable wearing complications with casual wear and how it just works imho.

You guys that go this watch still have it? What else have you added? I’m thinking about adding some more pieces and interested to see both you’re impressions of the 5170p now, as well as what other watches pp or others that capture your interest?
