Submariner deconstructed by Peter Speake-Marin

For anyone interested in movements, what's actually inside your Rolex, or a watchmaker's analysis of Rolex movement design, here's a great series of Peter disassembling a friend's 114060 for servicing.

Part 1: https://youtu.be/TBPjnI2hnoc?t=85

Part 2: https://youtu.be/o0Dp-Q78Uhw

No association with this Youtube channel. I'm sharing purely to enlighten fellow enthusiasts. We tend to discuss aesthetics, scratches, polishing, value, investment, "does this look good on my wrist while spearfishing in the Bermuda Triangle", "which ten of twenty $30k watches should I keep" and other superficial topics that we tend to forget about the engines inside.

Enjoy!

I agree and dig viewing a WS at work. The engine is a big part of what makes Rolex a Rolex. Built like tanks!

I've been in the film and video business for 40 years and know quality programming when I see it. Beautifully done and the watch repair person is a great narrator with just enough speaking to keep it moving. Now let's see one on the Daytona!

Always nice to see the result of the engineering, design and watchmaker’s skills inside the case.

The only additional video from them so far is on the Zenith Chronometro Tipo CP2. It's no Daytona but is at least a column-wheel chronograph. It looks like this was the first video in the series. Hopefully they do more.

Back to the Sub, here are photos on Peter's new site: https://www.thenakedwatchmaker.com/d...lex-submariner

My primary reason for buying Rolex all these years are the movements. The rest is just a bonus.

Awesome, thanks! Shows what I love about these ‘outdated’ machines— ultimately they are just a bunch of precise mechanical parts that work almost perfectly together. It still amazes me that these little gears can tick almost 700,000 times per day on my wrist and still come within around 1 second of accuracy per day with my Sub from 2001. It’s the equivalent of building a machine with gears to go exactly 1 kilometer, and in the end it’s only off by a centimeter or so

I would love to one day learn how to completely take a mechanical watch apart like this, but sadly I don’t think I have the patience required.

THAT is incredible!

Really increased my appreciation of Rolex. The complexity, the precision and the beauty! What a piece of work!

David, I agree. I have no experience with video production but I really appreciated his ability to succinctly explain without the "fluff" so many add to their productions.

Thanks OP. You found a gem . . . or should I say jewels!

If someone ever laughs about my owning a Rolex I'll just point them to this video.

a master watch maker speaking very well of a master watch company.

As for the modern sport Rolex bracelet, i agree with Peter, it is a fabulous design. I love both bracelet on the Submariners and the GMTs.
