Thinking about a 40mm Pam
Hey everyone,
The Panerai Pam 48 is one of the watches on my list for first watch to buy. I've tried on a Pam49 and thought it was definitely the biggest I could go with about a 6.5 inch wrist. Has anybody owned a pam 48 and could give me a review? thoughts on 40mm vs. 44mm for a small wrist? THANKS! |

A female famiily member wears the PAM 48. Looks nice and some of the guys with smaller wrists also prefer the 40mm versions.
I also have 6.5 inch wrists and can just pull off the 44 mm Luminors. You should give it a try. If you intend to flip this watch at a later date, then I think the 44mm are more sellable.

The PAM 111 on a 6.5" wrist. I would NOT buy a 40mm.

Unless the shape of the 44mm doens't fit your wrist, you can get an OEM 115/68 strap which is a few millimeters shorter than the standard 115/75. On a 6.5 inch wrist you may find it helps with the fitting.

I actually like the PAM 48 and 50 (w/ bracelet). But most Panerai aficionados prefer the 44 mm size and would not consider the 40 mm. I've had the 005, 024, 088 and a Radiomir 287 (45 mm) and liked them all. Take the suggestion given in the post above and try on the 44 mm, it may not be too big for your 6 1/2" wrist. But get what you want. If, however, you think you way want to someday trade it out, the 40 mm might be harder to switch out.

44 mm is the norm for Panerai... i have small wrist but the 44 mm is really good on it.... FYI, I am a conservative guy when it comes to sizes, but for Pam, 44 is good to go. On the other hand, 47 mm gets me thinking... hm......

Don't let people advise or push you to buy a 44mm model because it is the "norm." Try on different models and then make a decision.
My first Panerai was a PAM 48, then went had a bunch of 44mm models. Got tired of the tuna cans and sold them all. If I get another Panerai, it will probably be another 40mm model, perhaps another PAM 48. I have relatively thin wrists (more rounded and not flat on top, approx 6 3/4"). The lugs of the 44mm models hung over my wrist like in Bills pic. That is too large in my opinion. Go for what works and fits best for you.

A buddy of mine has a PAM 125. 40mm Power Reserve, fully polished case/bezel. Black face, silver seconds sundial and silver rimmed power reserve arc. I think the 248 replaced it and added a hobnail dial.
His wrist is slightly larger than mine (mine is 7.5) and I think it looks pretty darn big on him. It's certainly not like wearing a 40mm Rolex - the sizes don't look even remotely similar. |

Sorry - that was supposed to read "subdial". Darn autocorrecting text input!
Tapatalk doesn't appear to let you edit posts. Does anyone know I that feature exists and I'm just missing it? |

I've had a PAM48 for 8 years & still love it. The strap finally gave out last week & I got a Panatime replacement for $30. I have a 7 inch wrist, and although I am an admirer of some of the Panerai 44mm watches, they are simply too big for me. The largest I would go would be a 42mm Radiomir.
I've read several times that 40mm Panerai buyers often sell their watches & get a bigger one but I've never had that inclination. As for the watch, its turned out to be a great beater that goes with everything. I made it 6 years before it needed a servicing. I would say that the movement is nothing special (mid-range ETA I think) for what you are paying these days. |

They are meant to be big.
I have a 6.5" wrist exactly.

go for a 44!
I've got 6 3/4" wrists and here's my 88 (44mm) on me. Actually wish it wore larger!
Wedwrist.jpg Like most of the other guys said: Go with a 44...I think you'll regret a 40mm. Good luck! Keep us posted!

I've owned a PAM 48 and soon flipped it for a 44mm. Don't waste your money and get a Panerai that says PANERAI....44mm...Good luck!

The 48 sits high on the wrist due to the 7750 movement being thicker. I wear mine quite a bit as a dress watch and it's hardly puny.
I also have the 45mm Rad 210. This watch is very comfy because it lays flatter and the lugs are shorter. Back to the Luminor case, for my smaller wrist, the 40mm 048 just felt better. No regrets here....I like to see SOME strap on the sides. Here are some wrists shots with various straps. You tell me if it looks small. |

FYI, the lugs don't hang over my wrist. Were the photo top down, you would see they meet the "edges" of my wrist. I like it...a lot. In my not-so-humble opinion, a 40mm PAM takes away from the DNA that is represents Panerai...a large watch originally meant to be clearly seen underwater by Frogmen. |
