Question about historical pricing of the Royal Oak on the pre-owned market

Looking to purchase a 15400 on the pre-owned market around the $12k range, and my question is should I expect a hit if I decide to sell within 1, 2, 3...years from now?

Historically, have the prices of the Royal Oak continued to rise on the pre-owned market? What was the price 5, 10 years ago?

I ask because I've seen the value of certain brands (Hublot, Panerai, Glashutte Original) decrease with time as their popularity waned, as compared to a stalwart like Rolex. Can I expect AP to follow Rolex or Panerai, in terms of aftermarket value over time?

Side note: The 15400 has steadily grown on me since I saw it earlier this week. I have a post in the main Rolex forum stating that I'd pick the Datejust II over the 15400, but as I said there, I do enjoy brand diversity and I now find myself constantly thinking about the AP.

The devil is in the details my friend. Is it a black or a white Dial? I find in general the black retains better value than the White. Of course the boutique blue is the King here, it's rarity means that you prob can't get one preowned for less than $14500.

You absolutely can. DavidSW and Takuya both sell pre owned ones near the OP's stated budget.

I don't know historically because I've only been into AP for about a year. Before I tried on a 15400, I too would have picked a DJII over a RO. After trying it, I realized how wrong I was. My AP is a keeper, so I'm not too worried about the resale.

$12k preowned for the 15400 black or white dial, yes absolutely.
$15k or below for the 15400 blue dial? No way!
That's what I mean by the devil is in the details.

Ah, didn't realize you were referring to the blue dial about the price. My mistake. You're absolutely right. 🍻

No worries mate. If one wants to ascertain the depreciation of price for an AP, all you have to do is to look at 15300 prices. The RO tends to maintain its price, and I have a feeling that the blue dial will probably increase in value 10 years down the line whilst the black and white dial won't depreciate too much from the listed preowned prices you see today.

Hold your horses just a mo’ – the $16K listed item is in the UK, and inclusive of 20% VAT.
If the seller is VAT registered and not selling it on commission for a client, then the VAT is deductible for an export sale – resulting in $14K odd, plus whatever import levy is applicable.

You can't really compare Panerai/Hublot pricing to AP...different level of watch. Panerai has lost the collector base thought recent years, and Hublot, well, is just Hublot.

I have a blue dial 15400 that I don't wear much that I have thought about selling. If you ever make a trip to the East coast, shoot me a PM.

I paid 14.5 for my blue.

Worth it imo over the black.

With the pound at a low, you may be able to get one from England for a deal. Saw a blue for the equivalent of 13.5 recently.
